looking for a high gain preamp

Yeah, there's lot's of em, but looking for one with a very smooth lead sound. Something without a lot of dynamics/responsiveness, so the tone is consistent for sustained lead sounds. I have an ADA MP-1 which falls in this category IMO. JMP-1? any of the Mesa pre's?

Re: looking for a high gain preamp

I like the sound my friend get from his triaxis and another uses the rectifier preamp, both pretty good for what you want imo

Re: looking for a high gain preamp

lee jackson's perfect connection is badass as well, they're on ebay sometimes for not much dough.

Re: looking for a high gain preamp

I am not being smart here I am just looking to see what it is you are searching for a bit more. Are you looking for similar alternatives with different qualities or something very different in voice? The Engl preamps seem to do this to me.

Re: looking for a high gain preamp

I have an ADA MP-1 too and I got mine modified to be more "hot rodded Marshall" in character and it really steps up the thing a notch! MOD 4 MK II is the name of my mod. There's one to sound more like a Rectifier (MOD 3.666) and the ultimate mod 3TM which adds another tube. Check out www.adadepot.com for more information!

BTW,
What tubes do you use in your MP-1? Experimenting with different 12ax7 tubes from different manufacturers will open up alot of different sound possibilities. Buy some high gain graded JJ's, EH's, Tung-Sol's or Chinese tubes from www.dougstubes.com and you'll be surprised at how good this thing can sound stock! Give Doug a shout and tell him what you've got, he'll know just the tubes you want!

Something with a different sound of course - don't want anything that sounds to close to the MP-1. Just a smooth, full lead sound without harshness/biting. I guess you could say 80's metal sounds would be the target. Just nice singing leads without the grind...

Re: looking for a high gain preamp

The ADA Mod 4 MkII is nice, I had an ADA that I did that mod to and really liked it. My favorite preamp is the Kasha Rockmod II though, great high gain sound and probably the best clean channel I've ever heard. The middle gain channel is nice too.

Re: looking for a high gain preamp

Modified MP-1's, check the Voo Doo mod JMP-1, You may find the SFX-03 preamp pedal will get you a difference voiced tone, and with a screamer or other boost a different vibe (bit it is not a rack preamp). The Engl has a nice lead voice, from what I have heard. I have not been able to play one though.

Re: looking for a high gain preamp

Try the adadepot 3TM :D I have used a bunch of mp1s over the years and the modded once are very nice. I just got another one a few months back and I have 1 more coming within a week. I plan to get the 3tm on one and possibly the voodoo mod on the other.

If you like the mesa mark tones, you will probably like the studio, quad, and triaxis.

Sounds quite like a mesa triaxis....Marshall JMP-1 might be a good choice too...but AFAIK the marshall is LOT more money than the mesa, but I could be wrong. I'd personally go with a mesa triaxis and a mesa 2:90 Simul-Class power amp(but thats just me). One of the admins has a rig like this. Thinks it's RobertS...but don't quote me on it.
