Looking for a Neck Pickup to Compliment by Screamin' Demon 8

Hello all! Haven't been around for awhile.

I'm installing a Screamin' Demon with an Alnico 8 mag in my Agile LP copy, and I want to know what would be a compliment for it in the neck. The guitar features a mahogany body w/ maple cap, set mahogany neck, and maple fretboard; in regards to musical style, I most play hard-rock/metal thru higher-gain amps, but would like something that can do smooth leads and handle the cleans.

I was thinking a 59n with an Alnico 4 or a Full Shred neck, but any help/advice would be appreciated

Magswappers swear by A8 - A4 combo. Screamin' Demon A4 in the neck perhaps?

Pull the fr of the Screamin' Demon down a bit more with an A2 and make that thing more vocal. You'd probably need to jack it up though.

Jazz Bridge could be cool.

I've thought about this, as the regular Demon sounds pretty good in the neck, so I wonder what an A4 would do...

Pull the fr of the Screamin' Demon down a bit more with an A2 and make that thing more vocal. You'd probably need to jack it up though.

Jazz Bridge could be cool.

I could do that as well to see what happens. Also, I had no idea they made a Jazz bridge lol

APH-1B with an A5 is also an SH-2B.

The regular Screaming Demon is a great neck pickup , it would match the output of the A8 one in the bridge .
Otherwise a full shred neck is also a good option .

Do you have a certain tone in mind you want from the neck position? Chase that tone and it will 'compliment' your Demon 8 because it will sound like you want.

Some folks like a pair of pickups that result in a more subtle change in tones from bridge to both to neck. Mine typically end up with three distinct tones.

Also, don't let the idea that Full Shred and Screamin' Demon are too hot for the neck get into your head. The internet is full of guys who have read that they need low DC to have clarity so have never dared try. My current neck PUP of choice in a superstrat is the regular Norton and I couldn't be happier.

I'd just suggest a stock Jazz. It is easily found and would match well.

What about putting the A5 back in the Screamin Demon and use it in the neck? Then put an OG El Diablo, which is am overwound Demon, in the bridge.

At that point I'd just go with second Demon - I have the Alnico 8 mag in my current Demon, which I've seen nothing but positive things about on this forum.

Also, thanks everyone for the input! I have decided that I will go with a second Demon in the neck, and experiment between the A4, a UOA5, and the stock A5. I appreciate the help

Good choice , you can expect a big deep clean tone with strong attack and fluid leads . After if you find it too bass heavy you can also remove some fillisters for allen heads , it tames the basses .

I have a 1988 Charvel 3Dr with a Screamin' Demon 8 in the bridge and a lil' 59 in the neck. Its a very balanced combo and i would highly suggest it for any medium/moderate output superstrat build.

So I got back the guitar and the Screamin Demon' sounds pretty good. Definitely isn't high output, but it still sounds pretty good when boosted with a Klone. The A8 makes it sound pretty balanced, although it is pretty trebly. Gonna do some more experimentation with it to see how it sounds!

It still has the main characteristics of the Demon (very trebly) but it feels fuller in a sense, juxtaposed with a stock Demon. It's definitely louder than stock, and running it thru my trebly-loud amp (Jet City 100HDM) in a very bright Les Paul, I had to up the mids and bass a slight tad. I may put in a second set of filisters in place of the hexs. Also, it sounds great downtuned - it's very tight when in C# Standard/Drop B for rhythms, and the leads pop out. Very happy with it!

Sorry for bringing this thread up, but has anyone tried a PGb in the neck? I have one lying around (with big hex screws and an Alnico 8 mag, actually) and was thinking if it could work in the neck.

I would think a PGb in the neck with big hex screws and a stock A2 magnet could kill.

It could be a bit dark, though. Maybe with a polished A3 if you can handle raising the poles up close to the strings, which may be necessary.

I don't tend to view the A8 as a neck magnet at all, it's more of a bridge magnet, partially due to the bass response, but mostly because they are too darn loud. But a PGb in the neck has been done by many with a good amount of success. It works especially well in 24 fretters and Floyd-ed guitars. You might like a PGb in your Les Paul copy if you try hex screws.

But A8, a bridge pickup, big hex, and the neck position probably won't work too well. It might make a killer bridge pickup though.

That’s what i was thinking; i have an A4 and UOA5 on the way so i May throw those in the PGb. The reason i didn’t put the PGb in the bridge is because the guitar is in C#/Drop B and I’m not sure that’d sound too well, as from what I’ve seen the PGb doesn’t handle drop tunings that well. But with the hexes and A8...maybe
