Looking for a new OD/Dist for Just a Little Added Dirt/Bite

I am looking for an OD/Dist that will add a little extra bite/dirt to my clean tone. I have a Line 6 Flextone III that I use. I have a Visual Sound Route 66 V2 that I use. I keep the comp side always on. The OD side, I use for solos. I'd like a pedal that, when engaged, just kicks in a little bite/dirt and not really overdrive or distortion. I demoed a BOSS OD-1X through a Roland JC-40 amp. Basically, Guitar Center has a full line of BOSS effects connected to this amp. I was running my Telecaster through it.

The BOSS-OD-1X sounded great; but it's $150. That's a huge chunk of change for a pedal that I want one voice out of. Anyone have any ideas for pedals that will get me what I'm after?

Well, my first choice is an 805, although that might be high $ for your budget. However, the 3 band active EQ is certainly worth it. The next in line that I like is a Digitech Bad Monkey, which you can find all day for less than $50.

EHX Soul Food, great OD pedal, and cheaper than BOSS......

The TC Electronic MojoMojo Overdrive will do exactly what you want for the lower price point you're after.

TC Electronic Spark Booster - the full size one, not the mini (which I have, but is purely clean boost)

Tone City Bad Horsie may work for you. Can pick them up for 35-40 bucks. Only down side is it's not able to run off of a 9V battery.

I would investigate any klon type circuit for your purposes, that circuit is designed to be 'a little bit more' and could even be run always on. Works wonders on clean channels and is very reactive to the guitar volume knob. The EHX soul food is a cheap version of a klon for example but the marked is flooded with cheap alternatives to the real thing, you just need to find out which pedals are in that circuit type of 'family'.

The Way Huge Green Rhino is my favorite pedal. I use a bunch of dirt pedals, but I could get rid of all of them aside from that one and be happy.

I have the Flextone III. What channel/emulation are you using for clean? (Could affect which pedal will work best)

You're right. I have had a tough time using pedals, especially OD/Dist pedals with this amp. I currently use a Route 66 straight in and it does well. I bought a classic DOD Overdrive Preamp 250 (one of my favorites). Sounded great through the Fender amps at GC. Got it home and it sounded like garbage through my Flextone. Most of the time, I'm using the following amp/cap models:

Amp: Plexi Lead 100
Cab: 4x12 Brit V30's
Mic: 57 On Axis

I would look for something like the Mad Professor Ruby Red Boost. It can push your clean tone louder if the boost is low and overdrive with the boost turned up. Gets a really nice oranic overdrive sound that can get into the distortion territory.

Re: Looking for a new OD/Dist for Just a Little Added Dirt/Bite

One of the issues I continually face is with my compressor. I have two, the Marshall ED-1 and my Route 66. I love them both. Currently, the ED-1 sits in a drawer and I use only the Route 66. It's always on. It's part of my sound. Since I play primarily a Telecaster and more Country styles, it works very well.

Now the issue - whether you use a compressor/sustainer for guitar or a compressor/limiter for bass, you're doing pretty much the same thing; bringing the soft notes up and the loud notes down to a standard level. Some folks like that and some don't. Therein lies the issue. When you add a boost and it sits behind the compressor (my comp is first in the signal chain from my guitar), it gets squashed. It's kind of funny that I can have my pickups at whatever height I want and they're always balanced because of this.

I have had Telecasters with 4-way switches and both pickups in series is no louder than both pickups in parallel; only fatter-sounding. So, how do you have a compressor first in the signal path and still get a decent clean or overdriven boost?

I am soooo looking to grabbing a 805 for Christmas :D Seems very versatile. And definitely worth the dough. Like a TS with a 3-band-eq.

For a little dirt on top of clean I like the Timmy and the Bluesbreaker type circuit. Timmys can be found used now and the Snouse Black Box is an awesome Bluesbreaker style pedal.

I like the Klon type pedals for pushing an amp on the edge into more breakup.
