Re: looking for a pair of vintage style humbuckers for an agile lp style
ok guys what would you think about a Pearly Gates Neck pickup with A3 magnet and a 59/custom bridge pickup with UOA5 magnet
Love both of those pickups. I'm sure Jeff Beck could sound just like Jeff Beck if he used those pickups. I'm sure I'd sound just like me if I used those pickups. And, unfortunately, I'm sure Ted Nugent would continue sounding just like Ted Nugent if he used those pickups. But they're great sounding pickups.
because I like the winds on the jazz and jb and think they are a versatile set of pickups (I'm a big jeff beck fan, my favorite stuff is obviously yardbirds, truth, etc)
I figured that you of all people would be cool with the mag swap idea
I suppose a 59/custom in the bridge and a 59/jazz in the neck would be cool I guess as much as I love my Fralin Pure PAF's in a way I'd like a different sounding set of pickups in this new axe
I'm a big Jeff Beck fan too and studied and played along with Truth for countless hours. Saw him three nights in a row with Ron Wood and Rod Stewart playing tunes off of that album in 1968.
Jeff didn't use a Jazz / JB set of pickups on Truth as I'm sure you know. He did use the double cream paf pickups in his late 50's Les Paul with the covers removed for just a little more bite.
I can get close to that tone with just about any good paf copy: 59's, Pearly Gates, etc. Seth Lovers too, but those are a little more polite sounding, IMO.
To me, Jeff's tone on that album sounds more like an alnico 5 humbucker like the '59 than an alnico 2 humbucker like the PG. Regardless, I prefer alnico 2.
Both of the pickups in Jeff's Les Paul would have been the same pickup...like having two bridge pickups because these days, most sets have the neck pickup underwound compared to the bridge pickup.
(And don't forget to crank your 100 watt Marshall stack up to "11" !

)
