3 of your 4 choices are excellent: 36th PAF's, Bonamassa, and Seth. In mahogany, especially thick-bodied LP's, JB's are notoriously unreliable. They're all over the map from great to 'atrocious.' An 'ice pick spike' and 'flabby low end' can suddenly appear. With your other choices being so good, there's no point in rolling the dice with a JB.

Tonerider Alnico II Classic for the neck position. Possibly, their THR-1 Rocksong for the bridge. It has that extra push that a retentively accurate PAF replica might lack.

I guess I should've specified that if I did the JB/Jazz set I would likely swap the mags to UOA5 in the JB and possibly A3/A4 in the Jazz or spring for the Antiquity versions.

I guess I'm not opposed to getting another set of the Fralin Pure PAFs btw but yes I guess the problem I'm having right now is that there are so many great choices available.

Don't look. Listen. Allow yourself to be pleasantly surprised. :)

What sold me on this brand was a video demo on an e-Bay shop hyperlink. Only part way through did I realise that the demonstrator was sounding utterly professional on an Epiphone. (Kiss your prejudices goodbye!)

Re: looking for a pair of vintage style humbuckers for an agile lp style

ok when I say look I really mean stalk the interwebz for demos (including those on their site) hahahaha

goodness why is picking pickups so hard

Re: looking for a pair of vintage style humbuckers for an agile lp style

If money isn't an issue, go for the Seth set or the Bonamassa set.

Oh, okay, mag swaps would make the JB/Jazz set a better choice, but why not get a set that sounds great with the stock mags?

because I like the winds on the jazz and jb and think they are a versatile set of pickups (I'm a big jeff beck fan, my favorite stuff is obviously yardbirds, truth, etc)

I figured that you of all people would be cool with the mag swap idea

I suppose a 59/custom in the bridge and a 59/jazz in the neck would be cool I guess as much as I love my Fralin Pure PAF's in a way I'd like a different sounding set of pickups in this new axe

Re: looking for a pair of vintage style humbuckers for an agile lp style

ok guys what would you think about a Pearly Gates Neck pickup with A3 magnet and a 59/custom bridge pickup with UOA5 magnet

Love both of those pickups. I'm sure Jeff Beck could sound just like Jeff Beck if he used those pickups. I'm sure I'd sound just like me if I used those pickups. And, unfortunately, I'm sure Ted Nugent would continue sounding just like Ted Nugent if he used those pickups. But they're great sounding pickups. :)

I'm a big Jeff Beck fan too and studied and played along with Truth for countless hours. Saw him three nights in a row with Ron Wood and Rod Stewart playing tunes off of that album in 1968.

Jeff didn't use a Jazz / JB set of pickups on Truth as I'm sure you know. He did use the double cream paf pickups in his late 50's Les Paul with the covers removed for just a little more bite.

I can get close to that tone with just about any good paf copy: 59's, Pearly Gates, etc. Seth Lovers too, but those are a little more polite sounding, IMO.

To me, Jeff's tone on that album sounds more like an alnico 5 humbucker like the '59 than an alnico 2 humbucker like the PG. Regardless, I prefer alnico 2.

Both of the pickups in Jeff's Les Paul would have been the same pickup...like having two bridge pickups because these days, most sets have the neck pickup underwound compared to the bridge pickup.

(And don't forget to crank your 100 watt Marshall stack up to "11" ! :) )

That's my favorite Jeff Beck era too. Great stuff. But the JB humbucker had nothing to do with his sound then. Nothing wrong with swapping magents, but you're looking at some of the great PAF's, and it just seems like you ought to be happy with your PU in it's stock form.

Re: looking for a pair of vintage style humbuckers for an agile lp style

I suppose you guys are probably right I guess part of me wanted a more modern sounding set to be different since my other guitars pretty much go for vintage tones (antiquities, fralins, lollars)

My only other idea right now for this guitar may be to try a 59/Custom bridge and a 59/Jazz neck (that one would either be a custom shop option or a fun project)

So I guess for right now a set of Seths is probably my first choice

at least for now my only amps are an Orange Tiny terror 10" combo (Legacy 10, 30 watt) also running to a 12" cab (Legacy 12, 30 oz, 30 watt, 55Hz cone), and a vibrolux 2x10" with accutronics spring reverb (this was a handbuilt amp from a local friend teal tolex, white/silver/turqouise grillcloth, off white knobs, weber 10A150P and 10F150P speakers)

If you don't have a set of Seth's, that's what you should be getting. Great PU's. My favorite Duncan PAF by far.

I like the Seth even better than the Antiquity, although I like them both.

Re: looking for a pair of vintage style humbuckers for an agile lp style

I have Seth's in three very different guitars. A 77 Norlin LP Custom w/a maple board, a 95 LP Standard, and most recently put a set in a Godin xTSA. The character of the tone transcends, very predictable and I can easily use any one of those three guitars on tunes where a classic humbucker is required. Take the time to adjust the height of the pickup and polepieces, and I doubt you will be disappointed...

Re: looking for a pair of vintage style humbuckers for an agile lp style

Alright guys I have decided to go with a set of Seth Lovers with nickel covers

Now I am thinking of adding a bigsby b70 nickel tremolo since i have no tremolo guitars, this guitar has graph tec saddles would i need to switch to a roller bridge or will this one work

Re: looking for a pair of vintage style humbuckers for an agile lp style

Roller saddles would improve tuning stability but might also alter the tone. (Though, nowhere near as much as the Bigsby vibrato is going to!!!)
