Looking for a used G LP

Hey ppl! due to the fact that i cant afford a new Gibson Les Paul Standard, i was thinking that i could go for a used one: I was wondering, .. where can I find good prices, but most important.. quality stuff, and no frauds.? :banghead:
It's ebay an answer to my problems, or should i stay away from that kind of places?

Any guide would be really helpfull, because I have really no idea.

Btw, i never told you guys the amount you're willing to pay: I have $1200. Do you think is it possible to find a gibby standard for that price?

I'd say ebay is your best bet for finding a lot of different lps. Unfortunately, you cannot demo the guitar before, obviously, but you can always resell it if you don't like it. Go to all your local music stores and pawn shops and see what you can find, otherwise the bay it is. I was in a similar situation as you, only I was looking for a tele, I ended buying an axe on ebay cuz nothing local suited me.

You could try MusicGoRound. I've bought a couple used amps from one of the ones in my area. They like to sell used gear for about what it'd sell on ebay actually, but I think most of them back what they sell better than an ebayer

You can do a search for gear at the nearest store, or punch in your zipcode, and search at stores within however many miles.

I don't think you'll get great deals there, but you can try the guitars or amps out. I wish the one MusicGoRound was closer to me.

best deals on USED lp's i've seen are at smaller shops.... some shops that may need to reduce the prices to make rent kind of thing... larger stores are not quite the best place sometimes....

there used to be a small guitar shop in town run by a little old lady and her sons... they offered the best prices on used stuff!!!!! strange sometimes as they had sky high prices on cheap stuff and low low low prices on quality items....

LP Studios are good LPs for the money however I'd be hesitant to buy one without seeing and playing it first. Some neck profiles tend to be alot thicker or alot thinner than others of their same kind. Thats why its very important to play before you buy. I'd say go to your local guitar center and try out the LP Studio Vintage Mahoganys. Those are american made and can be purchased new for around 700 bucks. Another option would be to look for local ads on craigslist.com.

Consider some of the made in Japan copies for some serious bang for the buck.

Tokai Love Rock, Burny Super Grade, Greco, Edwards, Orville etc all represent some top quality craftsmanship and materials for much less money that you'd pay for a similar quality Gibson.

Now some of those brands are made in Korea as well, but if you stick with the late 70's, 80's and even early 90's models you really will get a lot of guitar for the money.

The "lawsuit" copies from the 70/80's being the best of the best from what I've read. They copied every last detail and as a result obviously lawsuits incurred. These guitars actually went on to exceed the quality Gibson was putting out at the time, both in construction and materials.

Like all guitars they will vary some model to model but a sweet MIJ clone will rival any $3-4K Gibson any day of the week and for about 1/3rd the cost.

just look in the advanced search engine and specifiy the amount you're willing to pay. If not it'll show you the $100,000 + LP's. This is the way I go because it only shows actual guitar shops and not personal ads (ebay style). Check it out, alot of times you can find some good deals.

I'm a big beleiver in trying guitars (specially Gibsons) before buying them. I did however buy my '98 Gibson Les Paul Junior Special from a guitar store who sent it to ebay, and I've always thought of it as neing an especially good guitar.

I hear good things about those brands. Edwards is one of the crazes over on the Gear Page right now. I've been hearing good things about Agile Les Paul knockoffs for a few years now. Every time I look through Rondo's guitar selection, I have to fight off GAS, and remind myself that I don't need a Les Paul.

The body shape is a little different, but they're building some good looking guitars for only a few dollars.

The 3/4" maple cap on that one is thicker than on my '82 Standard. Don't like abalone, otherwise I wouldn't be able to resist this one.

I've had a few Agile's and they are pretty solid guitars for the money. I'd take a $400 Agile al-2500 over a $400 Epi LP Standard any day of the week no questions asked!

Agile's are very similar these days but not exact copies of the LP. Slightly different body shapes, headstocks etc

As good as Agile is, however, my experience with them still does not rival a good MIJ LP like a Burny or Tokia from the "lawsuit" era.

I just picked up an 81 Burny LP Custom in a beautiful cream color thats yellowed a bit more with age even for $700 and couldn't be happier.

Its a beast at 11.5lbs but it plays beautifully and the construction is pure Gibson. Headstock angle and shape, diamond custom inlay on the headstock, albalone square inlays, neck thickness, fretedge binding, ABR bridge, you name it. Close your eyes and you'd swear it was a LP custom.

Add Bacchus to that MIJ list.

I've been hearing really good things about these, even from Tokai and fellow Edwards owners.
The MIJ Bacchus Duke models are supposed to be awesome.
Still cheaper than a new Gibby Standard.
They also feature oiled finishes.

Thanx for the answers.. I gotta say that Agile looks really really good!

But i'm still gonna try to find a Gibby.. (I know.. im so stubborn..)

for $1200.00 u could probably score a used LP Classic.... There was a forum member (Brewtone) who sold a Honeyburst Classic for $1250.00 last year. :) I believe Surgeon bought it. :D
