Looking for advice on pickup choice

Just got hold of a lovely 1979 Yamaha SG2000S (pre-coil taps). Unfortunately the previous owner decided it needed spicing up so put in some active Reflex Reds and a coil tap switch. Whilst they're pretty good pickups, it's just not the type of tone I'm looking for (I prefer a blues-rock sound to full metal)

I thought the obvious choice was the Alnico Pro IIs to try and get a Slash type of tone, but I figure it might come out very different on a Yammy with an ebony fretboard.

Any ideas?

Cheers

I have the Duncan Pearly Gates neck and Duncan Custom bridge in my dual humbucker Strat. I'm a blues player and I love this combo! You can use your coil splitter switch too, as both sound great when split...especially for rythym tones, but also for soloing .

There are lots of great combos for humbuckers: Jazz/JB, AIIPro (or PGn) and Custom Custom....lots more!

Ah, that's an old Santana Axe! Go to your local guitar store and tryout the ESP Horizon, but not the cheap one. The Horizon with the Duncans should be around $500 bucks give or take. Test out the tone on that guitar! I like it alot for the application you have in mind. If you like the tone on that axe then the pickup combo is Duncan 59 in the neck and the JB in the bridge.

Your axe is Les Paul-like so 500k pots should be the ticket.

welcome .... yeah i think a set of AIIPs would be happenin' ... a CC in the bridge if you want a bit more kick ... should tame any untoward brightness from the ebony

a set of 59s would be different, but just as cool

Thanks for the advice guys, given me plenty of options to think about. Must admit they all sound interesting, but the APH-1 Neck, CC Bridge combo is shading it at the moment!
