Looking for affirmation... JTM45 all controls on "10"

So, I have had to switch to an open back 2x12... from my beloved 4x12... w/ Greenbacks.

I have really been fighting to get my tone... I used to run everything pretty standard.
Bass 1to3, Mids 4to5, Treble 6to7, no pressence. Humbuckers...

After trying every combination of speakers and impedance and circuit wiring and jumping channels.
With absolutely no luck at all...

I finally just put all tone controls on "10" (no presence) and I am the closest I have been...

Does anyone else do this?

Was reputed EVH put all the knobs on 10. Angus put them all on 7 I can see how it could happen. If your ears think its good who cares what the knobs say thats what I think.

Well with open back cabs I seem to get closer to the Clapton Beano tone with humbuckers by putting both the treble and mids on 10. Are you running KT66's? Putting the bass up very high will be too much when running Kt66 in my Metro 45 biased a bit hot. What speakers?

Re: Looking for affirmation... JTM45 all controls on "10"

ive done the marshall roll on many nmv amps and it usually sounds surprisingly good

Re: Looking for affirmation... JTM45 all controls on "10"

I run mine pretty high. Normally have the mid/treble on about 8, and just back off the bass to suit...

Re: Looking for affirmation... JTM45 all controls on "10"

6L6's Hyboer Iron, Metro board... 62' specs. It's a RI that I fried the Iron on trying KT66's LOL
Blue caps are 33pf... always liked the 50pf better for the mids.

I definably prefer Series wring at 16 ohms... But I have no 8 ohm speakers at this time...
So I am Parallel at 8 ohms right now... Greenbacks (Green Berets well broken in)

Always loved my rig... the Amp, the speakers, my guitar... This is why I am so frustrated.
I have a very important gig tomorrow... First time with this open back 2x12.

But, I think I'm going to be fine with everything on "10"

Yes, I tried tuning the Bass down... But it seems everything is very balanced this way and I don't need to.

So here's to Nigel! ...... Tufnel that is... LOL

My 2x12 is closed back, so I have to drop the bass a bit else it sounds too bassy...

Yep. They get bright, but they really tighten up in the low end and get focused. My Class 5 even responds the same way.

I used to jump my inputs and dime the tone controls on my 1987ri for certain things...old school metal.

I feel sorry for the audience in the front row. Have you informed them all to wear earplugs, or is the gig at Madison Square Gardens

Re: Looking for affirmation... JTM45 all controls on "10"

The thing about JTM45s and JTM45/100s are that they are very bassy and dark compared to later spec plexis. That's why diming the tone controls, including the bass knob, caught my attention. But if it works it works. Regular 6L6s will not have the bass response of KT66s so that might be a factor.

Running the bass knob on 1 and the treble and mid on 7 or 6 is pretty common on cranked up JTM45s played with humbuckers. Also JTM45s don't have the split cathode on V1 like later plexis. Its been said that EVH's plexi had the bassier sounding cathode caps like the JTM45.

Re: Looking for affirmation... JTM45 all controls on "10"

I ended up running the amp as I always have. B 1-3. M 3-5. T 6-7, P 0
Just having a hard time getting used to the 2x12 open back in 8 ohm parallel...
Didn't realize I would miss my 4x12 quite so much... I can see where using a combination would be nice.

Thank guy's for chiming in...

Re: Looking for affirmation... JTM45 all controls on "10"

Yes... as soon as I can get a G12H... I am going to mix it with a BG...
I don't have any 8 ohm spkrs at this time... loads of 16 ohm... LOL
And I also have the back for this cabinet... I converted it to open back myself.

Re: Looking for affirmation... JTM45 all controls on "10"

You mean to tell me that the controls go below 10? They move?

CRANK IT!

Re: Looking for affirmation... JTM45 all controls on "10"

Why the switch from 4x12 to 2x12? I know there's a weight difference, but was it that or the floorspace issue? Can you get another matching 2x12 and stack them?

+1 ^^

you need to get the right cab and speakers

I have a 212 closed back combo that sounds awesome! but I can fit another in my car, so I plan to get another for stage presence and to compress the sound.

also, I am considering putting neodymiums to make it lightweight by 12 pounds for carrying up stairs :headbang:
