I have a custom custom in my ibanez neck thru. at least i was told it was a custom...i bought it used from gc. It seems to be a bit lacking in certain midrange frequencies and has pretty weak attack. Is there a pickup (preferably a duncan or a barekuckle, but im open to anything) thatd match what im looking for?

Pull out the pickup to verify which model it is. There are three models of Custom that differ only by the magnet used. Once we know which one you have we can go from there.

If its not already a Custom Custom, that's what you're looking for.

Re: Looking for basically a duncan custom but with more mids...any ideas?

Custom custom is definitely not lacking in mids.

i think the label said sh11. its missing something in the lows and mids and the attack is sort of weak

Sounds like you want much more mid-punch than the customs have, but if it's currently a cc (sh11) then try it with a ceramic mag first.

I think that might be good, but isnt the custom custom just a custom with an a2?

Custom w/A2 = SH-11 Custom Custom
Custom w/A5 = SH-14 Custom 5
Custom w/Single thick Ceramic = SH-5 Custom
Custom w/A5 and two screw coils with short hex bolts = SH-10 Full Shred

You might like an A8 magnet.

how does the custom compare to the custom custom? idk about the a8 cause the alternative 8 has a weird high end roll off thing going on and i play prog metal

A completely different animal: powerful, fast attack, full lows, fair amount of highs, slight scoop in the mids.

I find the highs displeasing/harsh/brittle/ice-pick which I attribute to the ceramic.

The Custom 5 is an even starker contrast; practically 180 degrees.

YMMV!

An Alnico 8 will definitely boost the mids, even more so than a stock Custom Custom. And sorry to hijack, but has anyone tried a Custom with either a double thick ceramic or triple ceramic?

Re: Looking for basically a duncan custom but with more mids...any ideas?

How would you characterize the lows and highs with an A8 vs. an A2?

It's been a while since I've A/B'ed them, but in general I find that A8s have a little more high end and tighter bass. A8s also seem to be more focused in the upper mids than A2s. The main difference between A8 and A2 is the output. An A8 is just so much louder than an A2 that you don't really notice the subtle nuances that shift in the pickup with the magnet swap, you just notice the dramatic volume increase.

Re: Looking for basically a duncan custom but with more mids...any ideas?

any ideas on a custom custom type sound with more low-low mid thickness?

Re: Looking for basically a duncan custom but with more mids...any ideas?

Double thick A8 is $$ for that.

Re: Looking for basically a duncan custom but with more mids...any ideas?

Yes, it does. If you want it to be a maxed out beast like you said of low-low mid thickness PLUS treble bite: use a double thick A8 and ceramic spacers on the sides. The double thick A8 provides deep bass and the ceramic spacers add bite.

idk about maxed out but thats an idea. how hard is it to change magnets?
