Looking for neck PU to go with PG Bridge

Re: Looking for neck PU to go with PG Bridge

that really should be a new thread but basically you can adjust each strings relative volume by raising or lowering the pole piece. closer to the string = louder.

you can also adjust the tone a little by messing with overall pup height then raising or lowering all the pole pieces. if you wanted a brighter clearer sound, lower the pup a touch and raise the pole pieces a little to compensate.

some people radius the pole pieces to match the fretboard radius but i prefer to start fairly flat and adjust each string as needed

Its funny you mention that. I was relaying to you about swapping out the A5's for UOA5 RC mags in my 59' Neck HB and 59' TB pups that are in my custom lefty 24 fret PRS clone guitar and I love them. I swapped the A2 magnets for a UOA5 RC mags in my Seth Lover Bridge HB and Neck HB's in the 05' Gibson CS 61' SG Les Paul. The UOA5 RC mag is more cutting and brittle there BUT: 1) I took the covers off of the Seth Lover humbucker set before installing them into the SG (and left them off), and 2) I haven't adjusted the screw pole pieces "flush" with the bobbin. I did swap out the UOA5 RC magnet in the SL neck humbucker in favor of a A3 polished long mag and now this guitar fulfills that (lead & rhythm) neck hb vision I had which makes the SG more usable for me all around. As for pup height in the SG, both of the humbucker's (neck & bridge) bobbins are flush with the pup mounting rings.

I believe my 59' screw poles were already flush with the bobbins as where the Seth Lovers are not, do you think this is why I'm experiencing the cutting brittle tone in the SG's Seth Lover bridge?

Play around with individual pole piece height and decide for yourself what sounds best, depends on your gear and your tastes. They don't all have to be the same height. Output-wise plain string strings are louder than wound strings, thick strings are louder than thin ones. So a plain G string is the loudest, and a wound D is the least. But you decide if you like the tones at the various heights.

I've enjoyed the Phat Cat neck pickup with a Pearly Gates Bridge (not currently using that guitar but the combo was really cool.)

I don't know if there is a specific written-out guide, but most people just do it by ear. Like others, I start flat, and ajust them if I hear balance problems. On many I don't, so they remain flat.

Re: Looking for neck PU to go with PG Bridge

The Pearly Set is a very unbalanced set in my opinion; neck is too warm for the overly bright bridge. If I were using the PG bridge, I would pair it with a Seth Neck or a Jazz Neck.

I just thought it was funny that the UOA5 RC 59' humbucker set has the screw poles flush to the bobbin (and the bobbins flush to the pup rings) and the PRS clone sounds absolutely fantastic as where the Seth Lover A3 Neck/UOA5 RC Bridge pups have the screw heads raised just above the bobbins (came that way from Seymour) and these humbucker bobbins are also flush with the pup rings. The Seth Lover UOA5 RC Bridge is more cutting and edgy whereas it should be very similar in sound to the modded mag 59' TB bridge.

That would normally be me as well.

I actually thought about that as well. I have a Phat Cat set in my PRS McCarty Standard and I really like the neck PU in that guitar.

It is a really cool combo that is worth a try–I ended up replacing the Magnets in both with UOA5s and was pleased as well.
