looking for SD recommendations

I usually put BKP pickups in my high gain guitars, but id like to try a different brand since some new ones have come out over the last few years.

I currently use the miracle man in the bridge and the cold sweat in the neck. I'm wanting a modern sound with plenty of mids and a lot of crunch without being overly bright and definitely not over 18k dc resistance.

suggestions? I also much prefer scatterwound and really like harmonically rich pickups in the bridge, and fat warm pickups in the neck without being muddy

thanks

My first thought is the Black Winter set, followed by the Sentient/Pegasus set. If you are insisting on scatterwinding, the Custom Shop is an option for you (and you are already used to paying those prices for pickups), so you might want to contact them and ask how much your dream pickup set would be.

Re: looking for SD recommendations

I tried the black winters when I decided to go with the miracle man bridge and cold sweat neck. I should have spent more time with them. the sentient/Pegasus combo is way to modern with not a lot of harmonics in my opinion.

Re: looking for SD recommendations

is there an SD pickup that is very close to the JB but that is more harmonically rich?

Re: looking for SD recommendations

Yeah, that is generally the Perpetual Burn.

Disagree here have a Pair of Burns love them but what you are asking for in the output range you are looking is the Alt 8.
The Alt 8 is a Bigger meaner much more harmonically active version of the JB IMO. The Perpet is a more polite fatter and more open version in some ways to the JB.
Have both and both are among my favorite bridge pickups but are pretty different.
My set up recommendation would be a Alt in the bridge and a Sentient in the neck. Ran that set up for a while in my KOA Carvin DC 127 and loved it. Swapped the Alt in that guitar for a 59 Custom Hybrid to get a more mellow tone but miss the heck out of the Alt / Sentient combo for more aggressive stuff. Will run that combo again just not sure in what.

The Alt8 is a beast. But intelligent, metaphorically speaking.

What is harmonically rich, if I may ask? Decay into a harmonic or easy to get pinches? Alt8 is a beast, I have mine matched up with a Screamin Demon. Tons of power. Crunch, slam and screams on leads.

Yep and is what I a running here it's very dynamic and when you really hit it kinda explosive!

Re: looking for SD recommendations

I'm thinking about using my Alt8 guitar for the latest solo competition; split to the screw coil.

your friends need to give you some more space to do your work.. :) I was waiting for them to backup and give you your big ride.. but they hung in tough.

That is a great sounding more modern hot pickup -I'd agree.

Had NO stage monitors that night at all as the in ear system went down at the board. Trust me we all thought the whole thing was a train wreck while on stage until we heard the recording later and were floored. I was fine with this one just the way it went down!! What I still want to know is how that drummer stayed in the pocket in that box??

thanks for the input so far, i'll try the alt 8 and see. do yall run them with 500k or 550k pots?

Re: looking for SD recommendations

What amp are you using?

Are you set on a pickup replacement, or maybe a pedal?

Ceramic or AlNico?

I love Duncan's Distortion, I have this in the only guitar I own.

I'm not sure what the modern sound your looking for is, but the distortion is bright, very treble friendly, and high output. Have you thought about a JB? People swear by them, I think there overrated.

Re: looking for SD recommendations

Could you post a video of a song, or something in relation what sound your aiming for? That way, maybe someone who has a similar taste you have could chime in

Re: looking for SD recommendations

Isn't BKP strongly hinting that Miracle Man *is* their take on the old Duncan Distortion, though???

Seymour's new take on the Distortion, with less treble, is called the Black Winter

Nope, the Miracle Man is inspired by Zakk Wylde's tone.

I think their take on the Distortion is the Painkiller, but I don't think they explicitly say so.
