Looking for some pedal advice

Hey guys! So I recently got a new orange tiny terror head, and I love it to death! The only issue I'm having Is that it does not have quite the heavy drive I'm looking for. I'm looking to play music like a day to remember, asking Alexandria, a bunch of crap that just drop tunes and plays some heavy palm muting lol. I figured a good few pedals could help me out. I want some pedals that can help me nail the metal sound, but also help out a good alternative and punk sound. I'm not looking to spend a ton, and I am aiming to buy used. I play with a Fender strat with a jb bridge, and a esp Ltd ec 1000 that has a emg 81/60 combo. What are your thoughts?

Re: Looking for some pedal advice

Have you tried one of these? Some people say they sound like crap but others like the brown tone.

Soft serve?

Anyways, check out one of the Bogner pedals, but there's lots of other choices for a lower price point. Maybe a Rat RI.

Re: Looking for some pedal advice

How much are you trying to spend? Are you gonna keep the amp clean while using the dirt pedal or do you want to have the amp overdriven and then hit the pedal for more gain/br00talz?

Re: Looking for some pedal advice

I'd like to spend under 150 total, but if there is a pedal that will nail what I'm looking for, I'd be willing to pay for it. I'd like to be able to use some gain on my amp, then use the pedal to really push it

Re: Looking for some pedal advice

your options are really endless when it comes to dirt, I just sold my rat deucetone which would've fit your bill. you can pick up a metal muff for ~$45, give it a listen

Re: Looking for some pedal advice

The metal muff is almost exactly what I was looking for. I can't find a full size for 45, but 60 works. Thanks!

Here's one for $55. I've never played one, but I think if you turn the gain down and volume up it could boost you amp as well. So its like a 2 in 1

Re: Looking for some pedal advice

Those kinds of bands often run Tube Screamers in front of their amps with the drive set low and the volume set to max. This pushes the front end of the amp harder and cuts some low end so that palm muting stays tight and chunky. Pretty much any pedal in the TS family should do that well.

Re: Looking for some pedal advice

First of all the bands like ADTR have good amps and guitars to start with, I think Kevin used to play with a Peavey 6505+ and a Les Paul custom, which is a great combination.

I play in a band who does drop tuned metalcore stuff and have a 6505+ too. And a Les Paul studio. I run a tubescreamer in front of my amp like mentioned above and the tone is amazing, very tight and thuddy, without going overboard on gain.

I know not everyone has the budget to get a 6505+ or a Mesa Boogie but look for second hand, or something similar. Laney do good amp heads. For pedals the Wampler Triple Wreck is a very good pedal and can be run into a clean channel on an amp.

This.

I've had Engl Powerball II, VHT Ultra Lead, and Bogner Twin Jet amps to do the drop-tuned metal thing. But honestly, none of them did any better than my OCD run like this into my Marshall 2203X. Use the amp to get a good overdrive started, then slam the front end with the pedal to add drive and tighten-up the bottom end. My 7-string was just as happy to run into that rig as it was the boutique metal amps.

BTW... I do prefer the OCD used like this to my modded TS9. It seemed to have more dynamics and feel more "alive". The Tube Screamer seemed muffled and sleepy in comparison.

Re: Looking for some pedal advice

Another thing to think about Kyler... there is no substitute for raw power and moving lots of air when trying to duplicate the tone and bombastic feel of drop-tuned metal. You can get enough distortion on your rig, and you can tighten the response up enough... but there's something about pushing a sealed-back 4X12 (or two) with a 50-100 watt tube head (or two) that really gives you that tone. Until you've stood in front of all that moving air you don't really understand. But once you have, nothing else quite captures that same feel and response. Gives you goose bumps at times. Kind of ruins you for more practical, less insane rigs though. So don't do it unless you want to be ruined. ;)
