Hi Yall
Long time lurker, first time poster.
Got a bit of an unusual query in my quest for something a bit different.
I play an early 80's Les Paul Custom - maple/ebony neck, custom chambered body, modified to H-S-H configuration.
The plan was to make it versatile enough to sound like a les paul and a strat -particulary in the quack positions.
At the moment I've got a SD custom in the bridge which I love, a Kinman Trad II in the middle (which I'm not too shook up about), and a SD Jazz in the neck with the A2 magnet from a SD Custom Custom. Both buckers have a coil tap, and the current quack with the Kinman is outstanding.
I still haven't found my ideal neck bucker however. I'm after a hollow sounding bucker to give me a real throaty midrange chime especially up the neck (kind of similar to a smoky kinman blues tone) but with enough gain to scream. In coil tap, I'm after a smoky blues tone similar to the Kinman Blues tone (think SRV tin pan alley ish).
The Jazz in bucker mode on it's own was a bit too fat. Swapping in an A2 from a SD Custom Custom went some way towards getting that midrange smokey tone, BUT I WANT MORE. The more midrange chime the better!
Gilmour nails the neck tone I'm after on Pulse - albeit with a EMG SA's and a strat. Steve Morse also nails the neck bucker tone I want (see the second half of the solo on House of Pain, Bannanas).
Now before you say it's not possible on a LP, my other LP that has a Floyd (which brightens the tone significantly) has a Sustainiac neck pickup that actually nails the tone I'm after - I just need to get it from a normal pickup/LP combo now.
I'm thinking of trying a Kinman Blues in the Neck/Middle. I'm also toying with getting a Steve Morse Sig HB.
I've listened to the SD clips of the AII and other pickups, but nothing really strikes me.
Anyone got any ideas? All comments greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance
