Looking for something to replace my Vox Satchurator

The Satch is going out of the board. I need something to replace it. Something with thicker distortion, higher gain, but can still be rolled off to get a softer crunch. I'm also under a tight budget. So far, here are my choices:

MI Audio Crunchbox
EHX Metal Muff
Barber Dirty Bomb
Visual Sound Son of Hyde

So which could be the best dirt pedal?

All of the Rat models I've played (I own the Turbo) have thick distortion that can go higher gain pretty easy.

Do try the AMT California Sound. A LOT of gain, cleans up nicely, fat and smooth sounding. I always think of getting one just because it has such a great tone but it's a little too smooth for me.
Check out the Youtubes - people like to use it for shred and metal.

i've tried a RAT, can't remember which model that was, but i do remember not liking it.

I've been eyeing that AMT pedal for quite a while. Too bad there aren't any dealer's here, that is why I stuck to those pedals in the first post.

Yes on the Rat, but try a Vintage Rat.

The tone control works backwards - turning it UP reduces the treble. The first few times I tried one I hated it because it was so harsh and trebley - but it was because I kept turning the tone control DOWN and that made it MORE trebley.

I sold my Satchurator and kept my Vintage Rat.

I sure liked that Satchurator though - I still think it' a great distortion box.

I noticed that too. I agree the Satchurator is a great distortion pedal, but not for my taste i guess. i need something more versatile. i the Satch can get you blues to rock tones, especially JS tones, but nothing heavier than that. and it lacks something in the mids, well at least in my experience.

Re: Looking for something to replace my Vox Satchurator

That's interesting to me because when i test-drove the satchurator i thought it had way too much gain...and i play fuzzed-out stoner doom metal...

If you need something with a boost then the Metal Muff is pretty cool. Lots of gain in there and i love the 3band EQ...and if i was gonna get the Son of Hyde i'd just go all the way and get the full-sized Jekyl and Hyde...i love how you can combine the pedals in the Visual Sound set-ups...not like on the ibanez JEM where if you've got the distortion pedal on and you want to boost it with the overdrive side...it turns the distortion channel off and ONLY gives you overdrive...****in lame.

Re: Looking for something to replace my Vox Satchurator

When I was a kid I sold so much good stuff because I thought I could play well but I really couldn't play well and the stuff didn't make me sound like I could play well - so I sold it! :lmao: Now that stuff is worth a fortune...and I wish I had it back again.

Re: Looking for something to replace my Vox Satchurator

I think you might be expecting too much from one pedal. I have Mesa Mark Series amps with arguably the best lead tone ever, and I still use a Real Tube 901 on my pedalboard. A paring of a Tubescreamer and a Boss Metal Zone for example, would allow you to cover a lot bigger sonic territory than any one pedal alone.

So if the Satchurator worked for some of your stuff, the best thing might be to look for a pedal that COMPLIMENTS that pedal, rather than replacing it altogether.

Good luck,

Bill

yeah that Full Bore pedal is not a bad super-tight-utra-hi-gain pedal. It's way too fizzy on the high end for me to use all the time but i've thought of adding it to the chain after my more vintage-voiced pedals for being, y'know.............................mehta

I never played one but the Carl Martin Plexitone looks pretty cool.
