Looking for suggestions/adive for a strat set...

Hi everyone. I picked up a Samick valley Arts strat. This was one made in Korea in the early days of the the merger, I was told. From looking at the sn it was made in 91'. It's built as well, and plays as nice, as my friends mim strat which was a surprise to me considering that I paid $200 for it. But I play hard rock and the pups are voiced more toward the vintage tone. I'm looking for a higher output pup set that has a good mid range push and really good harmonics without a shrill high end. I was considering getting a Red Devil set, because I love Billy's tone, but am wondering if thats the way to go. Does anyone have expierence with this set yet? I've seen the vid demo of the set, but practical expierence from a user would be of greater benefit to me. Also, if you have any other suggestions/expierence for a set that may give me what I'm looking for, I'd appreciate the help. TIA!

That's a great sound for rock. I don't have the Red Devil but I have the JB Jr in my Strat for rock and I love it.

JB Jr. bridge, Quarter Pound middle, and Lil 59 neck should serve you well. That's an iconic high output humbucker in the bridge, a vintage PAF style humbucker in the neck, and a P90 tone from the middle position. That would be my first choice for a Strat if all I heard was "hard rock with single coil sized routes."

Thats funny you mentioned the JB Jr. I was just watching vids for them and they sound really good. I'm not looking for a "strat" tone, if you know what I mean. More of a humbucker tone like VH and Paul Gilbert in Mr. Big type of tone. The JB Jr. seems to get that tone from what I've seen so far. Thanks for the help.

Not many people have the Red Devil set yet, as it was just released. I think I'd go for a Little 59/Cool Rails/JB Jr set. All of them sound great with distortion, and the Little 59 and Cool Rails do some great cleans as well. It is a great hard rock set without sounding too shrill.

Re: Looking for suggestions/adive for a strat set...

I've been looking at the Hot Rails set also. Any opinions? It seems to have a little less high end in the bridge pup, which might be what I'm looking for. I'm really trying to stay away from the "strat" type of high end if you know what I mean. But so far the JB Jr. is in the lead although it seems to have a little more high end than the Hot Rails. Thoughts?

Re: Looking for suggestions/adive for a strat set...

The JB Jr doesn't have the high end of a Strat set, while the Hot Rails doesn't have much high end at all... it is mostly mids.

Re: Looking for suggestions/adive for a strat set...

If the bridge position is routed for a humbucker, a Custom Custom or a JB in the bridge sound glorious in a strat. Put a Classic Stack or something similar in the middle position and a Lil 59' in the neck slot. All you'd need is a new pickguard and that would give you the opportunity to look at your pots and switch to see if they need to be upgraded. The CC or the JB will let you do the hard rock tones with great midrange push and will do VH and likely Gilbert tones as well.

The best sounding strat I ever had was set up H/H....but you may not want to go that way. If you stay all singles, I would go with what Mincer suggested. He knows his strat tones.

hot rail bridge, cool rail neck, lil 59 middle. that rocks and can clean up pretty good too.
