Looking for that Edge tone.

Hey all,

I'm thinking about refitting my MIM strat with some new PUPs. Big U2 fan and was wondering if anybody has any suggestions on what Pups to get for that chiming tone the Edge gets.

I'm not sure if Edge uses Duncans or not but any help would be appreciated.

Re: Looking for that Edge tone.

I think they're just stock Fender Strat pickups from whatever year his guitar is. Probably 70's. Duncan SSL-1 or Antiquity Surfers would be close. But no one sounds like the Edge except the Edge. It's not the pickups...

probably just stock fenders...so SSL1s or Antiquity II surfers.... and youd need a couple Vox AC30s he he

..... and Randalls, and Korg Delays and Visual sounds H2o chorus units and.... :burnout:

You get the picture. The Edge uses a ton of gear. He also used an Explorer in the earlier recordings, so a pair of low output humbuckers (APH, Seth's, I get close with the PG in my 'Paul) in a mahogany bodied guitar would also work.

Re: Looking for that Edge tone.

Big edge fan as well.. Main reason I decided to pickup guitar recently since the piano wasn't cutting it (though the edge plays that as well) Also to sound closer to him, and get that chime...some people maybe suprised to know that a lot of it or that wishy sound on the delay comes from his pick. He uses these blue picks that I ordered off a website that have the rubber stubby grips. Edge plays the pick upside down so the grips grab the string as you pluck it..kinda hard to pull up on the strings during rhythm parts though.

I think i'm gonna get myself an ASAT for his chimey tones and use my Ibanez SZ with a virtual PAF and an airzone for his gibson tones (Can you say, "Until the end of the world"?) :)

I think if you want to nail the edge's tone Vox ac30s are more important to his tone than any pickup.

Yea I've heard that as well. Whats just as good is to take nail file and file the side of the pick to give it a rough "edge". I do that and get the same result.
And yes a couple of AC30's would do the trick as well. I read on www.U2sound.com that edge owns over 20 vintage ACs.

Re: Looking for that Edge tone.

I hear alot of delay (memory man) on the u2 albums i.e streets have no name and, that typical voxy chime, also he uses a boss super overdrive. I think its more the gear he plugs into than the pickups, he uses a ton of effects, and he changes to a differnet gat nearly every song. I think its more his style of playing, very simplistic but effective. Using the right sounds at the right time.

Re: Looking for that Edge tone.

I saw a show where Edge flat out used a Les Paul, and didn't miss a tone. Similarly, I saw some old footage of Led Zepplin, and Jimmy Page was using some crappy old Tele' that looked like he won it in a cereal box. He still had that Zep sound. It takes alot of hard work to get your own personal killer tone(s) I guess, but after that much hard work, I suppose it's easier to dial it in from your favorite instrument. I like Les Pauls through a Rivera tube amp. Hard to wrong there.

Re: Looking for that Edge tone.

At the time of the Under A Blood Red Sky live album (i.e. early 80s) he had a DiMarzio FS-1 in the bridge position of his black Strat.

That's a pickup I'm quite fond of, but as others have said the Edge has used so much different gear over the years it's difficult to prescribe any particular pickup for his sound. He has one of the most complicated rigs known to man.

I started a thread a few years ago about how the get the Larry Carlton sound. Butch Snyder was saying that no matter which phase Larry was in (ES-335, LP, strat, tele) or amp - he always sounds like Larry Carlton. So much of what you sound like is in the fingers, the head, and the ears. And the heart.

I have had many pickups on my 89 strat. HSH, SSS, SSH, with different models for all the positions. I also have a boss GT-3, which I tweak like a computer scientist. Some of the amp models sound better with different pickups, depending on how they are eq'ed. Overwound pups sound better through the brighter models, more vintage pups sound better through darker amp versions. A lot more complex than that, but a good eq in your effects loop or even between guitar and amp can make a HUGE difference in your sound. So the gear between guitar and amp has a huge effect. Find a sound that you like and then listen to as much U2 that you can IN DETAIL and attempt to emulate it. It will take a long time.
