Looking for the best Tube Screamer I can buy without spending too much!

Re: Looking for the best Tube Screamer I can buy without spending too much!

Getting a used Green Rhino. I like options even though I really don't NEED a pedal. I also want an Xotic BB. So my list of pedals will be Green Rhino, Sonic Edge J&J and Xotic BB when all is said and done. I would also love a Sonic Edge Tumbleweed! His pedals are GREAT!

What about the Green Screamer from BBE?

I've got one, and it's a TS alright. It checks all the boxes for that kind of sound...lowers bass, bumps mids, warm od.

The only drawback is the reason they give you a power adapter in the box...the battery connector sucks, and will break the first time you take a battery out to change it.

TS-7 is a total sleeper pedal. Think about trying it.
TS-9 isn't that expensive
Bad Monekey is Bad@$$
Or, try a TS9DX - Four flavors of screamer with more booty/gain. If I had my life to live over, that's what I'd get

the ts9dx is a pos. the best sound on it is the ts9 setting

Re: Looking for the best Tube Screamer I can buy without spending too much!

I got a Boss SD-1 and am putting a Monte Allums GT mod in it, they also have an 808 mod plus, both for about $20 on a used $40 pedal.

Also I have seen some used Ibanez ts9dx that are really tempting.

Re: Looking for the best Tube Screamer I can buy without spending too much!

Perhaps we should ask the OP what he means by "best" Tube Screamer???

Re: Looking for the best Tube Screamer I can buy without spending too much!

I've got a green rhino and and an ocd on my board. Both those pedals cover pretty much anything and they stack well also.

Re: Looking for the best Tube Screamer I can buy without spending too much!

I couldn't make the DX sound like my ts9, not really even close. Just sayin'.

Re: Looking for the best Tube Screamer I can buy without spending too much!

KoT is not a TS, it's not based on a TS and it sounds nothing like a TS.

C'mon maaaan! You gotta be out of your mind. The KoT is clearly a TS variant. Just look at this article. It does nothing but contrast the KoT to the TS. I'm surprised you don't know this. Even on Analogmans own website he says basically its a best/perfected TS with less midhump, more clarity and definition, and stronger bass.
Look at this article man.all they do is contrast it to the TS.;

Re: Looking for the best Tube Screamer I can buy without spending too much!

I am going back to what has been proven to me in the past - Xotic pedals and Sonid Edge pedals. Getting another Xotic BB which reminds me of a slightly less mid heavy Tube Screamer and the Xotic EP!

Re: Looking for the best Tube Screamer I can buy without spending too much!

Looks like I am getting a used Green Rhino! Used....

If it doesn't work, I am going to move away from all OD pedals once and for all! A good friend of mine said since I use modern amps, I have no need at all for a tube screamer or OD pedal and he may be right. My Bogner, PWE and when I get the Electradyne will all have ways to boost for solos without a tube screamer. A lot of the guys who use tube screamers are using things like Marshall JCM 800s and older amps. I just might not need them with these modern amps. Too much of a good thing. I certainly am not lacking gain in any amp! LOL. Maybe my Sonic Edge J&J OD is all I need IF I ever want to add some gain, front end push, etc. For most tones I just use my amp's clean and the amp's gain. Plus all my amps have various modes that adjust gain and character of gain.

Have you thought of getting an eq pedal and just boosting the freq you want for your leads. I've totally been backing away from OD'S and playing with less gain. Sounds so much bigger then before. If you have a modern hi gain amp chances are its got more then you need, you just need to take your time to dial it in.

Yes, I have a fully modded GE-7 EQ in the loop and works great but I use pedals for other things and I like variety! For example, sometimes I will run my J&J OD through my Bogner's clean channel just for a different low - medium gain flavor. For the same reason, I also love having the Xotic BB! Sometimes I also like the flavor it gives me goosing my gain channels with the pedal! Options baby, options... :)
I am also picking up a Mesa Electradyne and I thikn having a tube screamer type pedal would be a cool flavor to have for boosting solos or single notes lines.
Hard to say because I tend to favor the EQ in the loop like you or the built in Blow boost on my PWE or the built in boost on my Bogner Shiva.
Maybe I will just stick to two OD pedals, my lovely J&J OD and a little boost like the Xotic EP, Keeley Katana or Fulltone Fatboost. Options!

Plus with the Electradyne, some songs we do like Alice in Chains Them Bones, I want that tight high gain tone. The Xotic BB or J&J help it get there. Maybe I should skip the tube screamer or Xotic BB since the BB is a lot like a tube screamer.

Why do you think so many old school guys use tube screamers then? Maybe these are mostly guys using old non master Marshalls as a lead boost? I know the guys in Pearl Jam do this. Since my amps have channels and lots of gain on tap and an EQ in the loop...could be useless. Again options are still fun so I like having the J&J on the board and an Xotic Ep would be cool to grit up my clean and it is a pedal I could leave on! I hear people do the same with the Katana and Fatboost.

Only own two TS type boosters: Green Screamer and Bad Monkey.

BBE Green Screamer - not a fan. Messes with my tone too much. Doesn't seem to boost that well either.
Bad Monkey - much better than BBE GS'er, can blend it better.

Re: Looking for the best Tube Screamer I can buy without spending too much!

I really dig the GT-OD, and the slightly hotter Wylde OD. Both are really transparent and maximize the amps natural tone. I pair the Wylde OD with a Gretch Hollowbody and get really great thick tones.

The pedal I'm really digging on right now is the MXR Custom Badass Overdrive. It's got that TS808 feel, but doesn't have the bass drop off of the Tubescreamer.

Are these all fairly true Tube Screamer circuits? I have a Sonic Edge J&J, bought a used Way Huge Green Rhino and an Xotic BB thus far too test. :)

Get this while you can. It's a great, and has two pedals in one: a GT-OD, which is a Tubescreamer and the Zakk Wylde Overdrive, switchable with an internal jumper switch. Only problem is you have to switch it from the inside, but there are some instructions on how to change the jumper switch inside to an external on off toggle switch.
