Looking for the right Pickups

Hey everyone. The reason I've created this thread is because I need help. My boyfriend has a Jackson RR 94 Flying V but it's missing a bundle of parts. One of which is the 2 pickups needed for the guitar. Now, I am not new to playing the guitar, however, I am new to all of the specific parts that make up a guitar and I have no idea what kind of pickups are needed. I realize that depending on style and such that there are a plethora of options but using the tool was not much help for me.. I'm trying to surprise my boyfriend for his birthday with all of the parts needed to fix the guitar so asking him about it is not an option lol. I would greatly appreciate any help on the matter :fingersx:

Most Jackson Rhoads Vs use a pair of humbucking pickups; I'd expect your boyfriend's guitar to look like this (and have the same pickup configuration) otherwise we may need to revise recommendations. Current Jackson USA Rhoads Vs use the Hot Rodded Humbucker Set and generally speaking it's a great fit for the guitar and the styles you'd typically play with one.

Yep, the most important factor when deciding: what kind of music does your boyfriend play?

Welcome to the forum!

First lets start with the kind of music he likes, and maybe some of his favorite bands and guitarists.

Re: Looking for the right Pickups

That's exactly what his looks like, only his has a regular wood finish rather than colors. I appreciate the information. I've been searching all over the web for three days, trying to figure out what is needed to no avail. If that's what would fit best with his guitar then that's what I'll get. I'm not sure what pickups it used to have because right now, there aren't any in/on the guitar lol

Re: Looking for the right Pickups

He prefers hard rock/Heavy Metal over anything and his all time favorite band is Bullet For My Valentine

Re: Looking for the right Pickups

without knowing more specific what music he would be playing with it, I’d agree with the Hot Rodded Humbucker set. It seems to be a very popular set for that style of guitar. I think a Mayhem set would probably sound pretty good in a Rhoads, also, but I don’t think it would be quite as versatile.

Re: Looking for the right Pickups

He would only be playing Hard Rock/Heavy Metal like Bullet For My Valentine, Metallica, Trivium, and such

If his guitar was made in the USA in the last 20 years or so, it would have had the Hot Rodded set I recommended. Otherwise it would have had either Jackson or Duncan Designed pickups which are decent, but not spectacular.

The Hot Rodded set should work great for those tones.

Re: Looking for the right Pickups

Yes. Hot Rodded Humbucker set should be perfect.

One nice thing to know - if you buy Seymour Duncan pickups new from an authorized dealer and he decides he'd rather have something different, you can exchange them within thirty days.

The exchange policy is 21 days rather than 30, but a huge +1 otherwise.

Re: Looking for the right Pickups

That's beyond awesome, haha. I appreciate all the help guys. I'll most likely be going with the Hot Rodded set then

Re: Looking for the right Pickups

Lol well thank you very much for that. He has no clue that I'm doing this so I'm trying to learn as much as I can about all of the different parts I need for this guitar. I just learned that the Volume and Tone knobs are actually called Pots haha and now I've got to figure out what pots are needed for it

For those pickups you'll want three 500K audio taper pots with a short shaft. I'm partial to CTS pots, but Bourns also makes a good product.

Re: Looking for the right Pickups

Alright, awesome. They're not volume and tone? They're just called Audio Taper Pots, right? I figured they'd be 500K, so I'm glad I at least knew that haha

Re: Looking for the right Pickups

I used to own a Jackson RR3 from around that time, and installed a set of Invaders. Perfect for all kind of Metal/ Hard rock.

The difference between a volume pot and a tone pot is that the tone has a capacitor in series to ground so it only affects frequencies above a cutoff point.

I'll try not to open a can of worms here, but there is no standard value for a tone cap. Fender used .047uf BITD while Gibson used .022uf, and some players like a .033uf compromise value while others like .015uf. The way the different values work is that a larger value results in more treble roll off; I personally find anything above .022uf too extreme to be useful. For dual humbuckers with a master tone control I like .015uf as it is subtle enough to not turn the neck pickup into mud, while still cutting enough treble when using the bridge pickup.

Re: Looking for the right Pickups

Okay, that makes sense. I'm just not sure, since there's three pots in total, if there's two tone and one volume or vice versa. Since I'm going off of holes in a guitar and pictures on the internet, it's hard to figure out haha. I'm just supplying him with the parts on his birthday and it's up to him to reconstruct his guitar with the items I procure
