Looking for Versatile Pickup Suggestions

Hello, ladies and gents. Long time lurker, first time poster here.

I play an Ibanez LP copy with mahogany body, mahogany set neck, rosewood fretboard, and a flamed maple top. When I originally got it a few years back, I immediately ripped out all the stock electronics and rewired it with a GFS Fat PAT in the neck and GFS Crunchy PAT in the bridge position to upgrade on the cheap. While I still love the Fat PAT, I’ve gotten to where I find the Crunchy PAT a bit thin and lacking, and I think it’s time to upgrade both to some proper Seymour Duncans. Both of my current pickups are Alnico Vs with the neck output at 10k and the bridge at 14k.

I’ve become a little overwhelmed, though, and here’s why: I kind of want everything. I play a little bit of all different styles with focuses on clean rock, blues, and also metal (mostly groove metal and shred with a little djent thrown in from time to time). I generally (though not always) use my neck pickup for cleans and blues and my bridge pickup for metal. While I’m certainly not afraid of rolling back the volume and tone to get what I’m looking for, I’ve wired it with a master volume and tone so my blending options are a little limited. Also, for what it’s worth I’m not really interested in coil tapping.

I’m wanting something warm, fat, smooth, and round in the neck though still clear and articulate. In the bridge, I want something with some bite and fairly high output but without a crazy mid scoop or sounding sterile and dead.

I know ideally I should have two guitars - one for a warmer, more vintage style setup and one for a higher output, modern setup. Unfortunately, that’s not much of an option right atm. I’m trying to avoid mismatching pickups that I’ll need to EQ completely differently or with a massive difference in output and volume. If I had to compromise, though, I’d rather give up a little on the metal side of things in favor of the warmth.

Also, I would prefer something that comes with a nickel/chrome cover or a standard pup that I can put one on, but this is only for aesthetics and is really of least concern.

I know I’m asking for a lot here, but what ideas do you guys have in mind? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum!

I'd go for a 59 in the neck, and a 59/Custom Hybrid in the bridge. The 59 can do all kinds of music, and remains tight in the bass and never gets muddy. The Hybrid is more powerful, suited to more kinds of music than more powerful humbuckers, and doesn't lose any touch sensitivity. These will be very worth upgrades for your guitar.

Jazz is pretty versatile in the neck, but perhaps so ubiquitous that it's become vanilla. EVH Wolfgang neck is warm and fat but perhaps not as articulate as you'd like. I really like the EVH though, something about it just says hello, I'm here, I won't be overlooked.

Mincer - once again you beat me to the punch with this recommendation. Ah well, consider it seconded!

Thanks for the recommendations, everyone!

I had considered an SH-5 Custom for the bridge and a 59 in the neck, but I was a little worried that the 59 might not have quite enough mids. Then again, I also thought it may not be anything to worry about since I play a mahogany guitar and I usually EQ with a little bump in the mids anyway.

The SH-5 + 59n' combination is killer! I got amazing (positive) feedback from the people that have hired me to play guitar for them, when I play my DBZ Bolero with them installed. You will not go wrong.
You could also go for the WLH (Whole Lotta Humbucker) in the neck for more mids!

Thanks again for all the recommendations.

I think I’ve settled on a SH-5 for the bridge, and I’m leaning toward a WLH for the neck though I’m still considering the possibility of a PG in the neck.

After doing more research, I like the 59, too, and the scooped mids don’t seem to be a problem in an LP. However, I did notice the boomy bass everyone talked about in an LP. I just feel like the WLH would be a little more balanced and closer to what I’m looking for.

The PRail is the most versatile neck pickup I’ve ever used. You get 3.5 different sounds.
