Looking to buy a guitar, need some help :)

Re: Looking to buy a guitar, need some help :)

My advice for starting out . . .

- set a budget
- find a buddy who plays a little guitar to come to the music store with you
- get him to try out a few of the guitars that you think look cool
- try the guitars that he says play well
- buy the guitar you like best of that limited bunch

A rank novice doesn't really know what a good or a bad guitar sounds or plays like, you need someone's help on this one.

I'm with this guy. I've only been playing guitar about 1.5 years, so I'm barely out of being a complete novice myself. Basically find something you like and stick with it. I would personally recommend buying in person, as you can never know what you'll get over the net (it could be a dream or bad). When going into a store you can actually ask, and while they are salespeople at the end of the day, they can help you out. You will also be able to see and touch the guitars in the shop, unlike on the internet, where you have to wait until you open the package to see what you're dealing with. Just have a budget in mind and DON'T change it! Tell them your budget and just see what they can give you. If you like it, buy it. If you don't, then don't be afraid to say 'no' to them.
