Looking to go more "vintage".....

BTW, are you really happy with the EMG's or do you like passive pickups too? EMG's always have too much 'thrust' and attack for me. They're too quick and about as far from "vintage" as you can get...and it really does start with the guitar.

I like both, and I have guitars setup with each.....that said, I'm looking to remove the EMGs out of my LP and replace them with something passive.

Either way, I have a Laney Iommi that should be at my place on Tuesday....hardly vintage, but we'll see where that takes me.

Re: Looking to go more "vintage".....

you might be surprised how much more vintage you can get your recto to sound with pickups like seth lovers. Low output vintage style pickups with loads of character could probably goose your recto into a slick 70's sound.

Re: Looking to go more "vintage".....

I've used a Matamp GTL, but not the non master volume GTO, i've never played an amp I want more. Its one of the heaviest, dirtiest, most harmonically rich all-encompassing tone I have ever heard. I was driving it with a Z Vex fuzz factory on top of its already pretty massive drive. I know the elecetric amps are not exactly the same as the Matamps, but if anything they are rumoured to be even better.

I agree that those EMGs have to go. They are just too abrasive and aggressive for doom. I use a Custom Custom and A2P in my Les Paul. They Kyuss it up nicely, thats through my DSL and a Big Muff.

On the subject of that Iommi head you have ordered, i've heard that its got quite a modern tone, with alot of gain, its not a typical Sabbath tone, but as long as thats not what you are after i'm sure you'll love it. I don't think its tone is that far removed from that of your current rig though.

I will also second a Laney Klipp, or an AOR Pro Tube head. Matt Pike (High On Fire) used those before he went to Matamp, and now Soldano. Also look for the old Sunn O))) stuff, thats killer. Any old EL-34 amp pushed hard will get you in the ball park, but I dont think you can do better than Electric, Matamp or Sunn.

Anyway, hope that helped, keep it slow, keep it heavy!

YES! Someone who understands where I'm going with this idea (well, you and SpeedDemon). :beerchug:

Agree. The very thing I love about EMGs (very percussive attack) is the exact thing I'm trying to get rid of. I'm leaning towards the Gibson Iommi's though, for reasons of my own.

It's not really ordered, I bought it off a friend a number of months ago for a good price, I just haven't had the time to go pick it up off him (he lives about 350km away), so he's shipping it down today, and it should be here tomorrow. I originally bought it 'cause it was a cheap EL34 amp, and I wanted some more tonal options (wanted to have access to an EL34 lead tone).

Almost had a Sunn....drug my ass too long and someone snatched it up on me.

As said, I'll keep my eyes open for those amps....but I don't live in the best used market....

Anyway, hope that helped, keep it slow, keep it heavy!

Ahhh...I get it now...you're after a stoner rock tone? Kinda like the Melvins or FuManChu?

Yah. That's about 180 degrees away from the Boogie thing.

Be on the lookout for an old PV Ultra 60 or Ultra 120 tube head...they're stupid cheap when you find 'em and might give up what you're after. Soundgarden used 'em in the early days of the band...probably up to the time that "Ultramega OK" was released and maybe even "Badmotorfinger".

Bingo. :beerchug:

Except more towards doom metal than stoner rock.......Electric Wizard, Crowbar, St Vitus, ect.

I think there's a Peavey Ultra for-sale downtown, I'll go check it out.

Re: Looking to go more "vintage".....

BIG 1+ on the Custom Custom bridge Pup, I find it works really good for what I play(Black Sabbath, Clutch, Orange Goblin right down to High on Fire) As far as the sound of Matamp's I haven't played one, but as far as I can hear myself like Kyuss_rock said I have never wanted any other amp or(well except maybe a Orange OR80) Another thing you should try is bass amps(like the SunnO))) stuff or, I think one of the guys on the www.stonerrock.com forum is using a new traynor bass amp and he likes it)

Cheers mate! :beerchug:

One more partner in crime. I just ordered a new one today, killer amp.

I used to use a Peavey bass amp and dirt box when I played Grunge as a kid. :)

That's part of the reason I'm looking into a non-master volume.....I'm leaning more towards fuzz and overdrive than I am towards preamp gain.

The other part of the reason is that this is doubling as a somewhat low wattage bass head.

Re: Looking to go more "vintage".....

Daisy, you've convinced me that you really want a new amp. Seeing as how you're going to be stuck with the one that you've got for a bit, see how this works for you:

Lead Channel, Vintage Mode
Gain - 12 o'clock
Treble - 12 o'clock
Mid - 10 o'clock
Bass - OFF
Presence - 9 o'clock
Reverb - to taste
Master - 11 o'clock
Output - 11 o'clock

I hope that it gets you closer to a vintage tone that you can live with for awhile. Let me know how it works for you. I have my doubts because of the EMG's, but we'll see.

Re: Looking to go more "vintage".....

Tried similar settings already. :)

And yeah, I'm looking at adding another amp. I love the modern Recto sound, so I'll be keeping it, but I also want something more vintage to add to my pallate.

Re: Looking to go more "vintage".....

Laney Iommi arrived today. Unfortuatly, I've only been able to play it quiet or loaded down with a Hotplate near "bedroom" levels, but the amp sounds really good thus far. I'm looking forward to opening this thing up and giving it some room to breath.

For a single channel amp with 5 gain stages, it has a surprisingly good clean sound when you roll the guitar's volume down. My only complaint about that method is that you have to deal with high gain hiss, but it's only noticable when you're not playing.

The upper mids are nice, and the top end isn't as harsh as the Recto. It also doesn't have the same bottom end thump, but unlike 6L6s the EL34s sound better as they're compressed (read: sweet, naturally compressed lead tone).

I don't think this amp would be for everyone, but I really like it. It lacks the thickness and thump of a Boogie, but has more than enough balls to make up for it.

Considering I haven't opened the Laney's volume up yet my opinion is still a little pre-mature, but thus far my opinion is that I prefer the Recto's rhythm tone, but the Laney kills it in the lead department.

For rhythm/lead I would be willing to use either one, but I'd choose whichever best served the music.

Hardly "vintage" sounding, but a refreshing change from the Recto. I doubt it'll become my main rhythm amp, but it is killer sounding and damn fun to play.

Re: Looking to go more "vintage".....

Ok This is off topic but.... I see you have a Chicago Iron Works Parachute Wah there. How does that beast sound, and is it worth the cash?(Nice score on the laney by the way)

Re: Looking to go more "vintage".....

Hey man, could you record some clips with your new Iommi amp? I can't wait until mine arrives..

It sounds exactly like on Black Sabbath's Electric Funeral.

I think it's worth the cash, but if you're looking for a more traditional "Hendrix" type wah you won't. I don't like recommending it to people because it's a specific sorta wah sound, and I don't want people thinking they waisted their money 'cause I said it was good.

Oddly enough, with my Recto I only ever felt so-so about it. It was too harsh in the high end and too deep in the bottom....thus I prefered the Dunlop ZW wah.

With the Laney though I found the ZW wah to be too tame....so I plugged in the Parapedal and the formerly harsh highs compressed and sounded killer, and the amps lack of bottom end (when compared to a Recto) tamed the overly deep bottom end of the wah. With the Recto I could only sweep a very narrow range with this wah and keep it sounding good, but with the Laney I could explore the whole sweep.

So, I guess what I'm saying is that it seems to like EL34 amps more than 6L6 amps.....though I'd honestly have to experiment more with different amps before I could say that with any authority.

I would, but I don't own a mic....

Re: Looking to go more "vintage".....

Ah, damn. Guess I will just have to wait then...But can you tell me a little about the sound? Does it really have the Black Sabbath tone, and does it sound like on 'Fused' ?? Or, does it sound like something completely else, since Tony downtunes, and I don't think I have heard the amp in standard tuning, so how is it?
