Re: Looking to pick up an es335 but don't know
Remember that every piece of wood is unique (like a snowflake) & that one good-sounding guitar of a particular model, all will not necessarily sound the same. Plus you have the amp in teh equation, and they too vary within a certain model. You can get a Gibson that doesn't work so well with a particular pickup, or get an Epi that sounds great with it. The fun is in getting a few pickups and magnets & tweaking your sound. Spending 2 or 3 grand on one guitar doesn't guarantee you'll get what you want. I've gotten some used imports for half their original price, in excellent condition, put in American-made pickups, & wound up spending $300 to $500 in total for a great sounding (and looking) guitar. If someone's determined to spend several grand to get the same results, I probably can't talk them out of it. They should know that the majority of that money is going for the name on the headstock, not tone improvement. A really good player can sound good on a cheap beginner guitar. In many fields, Americans tend to be more obsessed with the tools rather than the talent.
