Re: Lordy mamma help me! I've done mess my pants.
the sunface has more gain and more top end. I'd actually been using a bc108 instead of the nkt for a few months because it has more clarity and punch. ive been using it for the last couple days at home. Ill use it at a 3 set gig on sunday and a band rehearsal today. Im looking forward to seeing how it goes in that context.
The cool thing about the sunface is that it has the warmth of the germ, abut the clarity of the silicon. It cleans up really well which is a priority for me. The only thing in my chain is a fuzz pedal and i get all my sounds from the guitar knobs and switches.
Essentially, the sun face does everything that both my old nkt and silicon fuzz do well, but better.
Silicon is clear and punchy but does not have the big variance between really dirty and clean that germanium can get. Germ has the big variance, but can get a bit indistinct at times. My old nkt has no bias knob, so when it gets hot it sometimes doesnt like me rolling back the volume knob on my axe and it gets all sputtery. HAving the bias knob on teh sunface addresses that. Also, the higher gain trannies cut better.
Essentially, the sunface is better in all aspects of both the bc108 and the nkt fuzzes. Maybe its cos of the higher gain trannies, maybe its cos hes tunes the circuit, or maybe its because of the bias dial. Either way, it is the best tool for the job ive yet tried.
I was thinking last night about all the different fuzzes ive had over the years from an old foxx fuzz wah, a black dunlop fuzz face, a muff, a shin ei, a boss, a voodoo labs and the two hartmans. This thing is pretty damn cool. I guess it takes a while to work out what works best for you, but the sunface is it for the way i play now and the kind of sounds im after.
ps. I might look into modding my hartman so it sounds more like the sunface. I have the parts for the hendrix/mayer mods (i might crank the gain a little) but what id really like to do is install a bias trimmer. From using the bias knob on my bc108 and the sunface ive found that setting the bias is a big thing for me. Im just not sure which component to replace and what value trimpot to install yet. Ill look into it. I think its the resistor coming off the emitter of q2, but im not sure (i think its 100k?). any fuzz pedal experts feel free to chime in and let me know which resistoe governs the bias and what value trimpot i should use...
