Love for the SH/TB-14 “Custom 5”

Just wanted to post some love for the SH/TB-14 “Custom 5” pickup. Lots of mixed reviews on the forum. Without doubt, pickups are SO dependent on the guitar, the amp and the player. LOTS of variables to consider. I had recently made the switch to passive pickups after decades of playing EMGs and I haven’t looked back. FWIW, the EMG 57 is a MUCH better choice than the 81 or the 85 - it has ‘passable’ string separation and clarity that the 81 & 85 cannot match. But none of the EMG offerings respond well when you roll the volume back and they end up making any/every guitar you put them in sound identical - regardless of body wood or hardware.

I had been swapping ceramic Customs and Alnico Custom Customs in my various guitars and was really pleased with the dynamics and tones I was finding. So when I saw a ‘previously enjoyed’ TB-14 on Reverb, I could not resist. This thing has remarkable clarity for its rated resistance. Great string separation even with quite a bit of gain and still cleans up beautifully with the volume knob. I’ve got it in an Ash Strat body with a Hipshot 2-point trem - strings through the block like a Fender - with a graph-tech nut and locking tuners. (A 6-screw trem would no doubt sound a bit chunkier.) I’m playing through a ‘newer’ Splawn QR with the mid-cut and old/new switches. Using the ‘old’ voicing and switching the mids back in adds some fullness to the ‘scooped’ characteristic of the A-5 magnet. The pickup has a cool ‘clean’ quality to it even when playing with quite a bit of drive. This pickup won’t lie for you, (neither will a Splawn!) but if your chops are dialed in, the clarity of speedier lead lines sounds absolutely killer.

Might sound harsh or sterile with another guitar or through another amp, but so far, I’m really diggin’ the TB-14.

I love it, too. But to be fair, the guitar that it is in is super mid-heavy, and the brightest pickups sounded like mud. I swapped an alnico 5 magnet into a Custom Custom, and it sounds like a usable guitar now. More than usable, it is great. The guitar is poplar, which can be all over the place, tonally. The C5 sucked all the mids out, which is what this instrument needed.

Just out of interest, what type of guitar was it Dave? Or can't you say?

It is an Ernie Ball/Music Man SUB1. It is a great playing instrument, it just needed help with the sound.

When I joined the forum, the most recommended PU's for SG's were a C5 & '59N, which are still a good choice. After Addiction FX replaced Wymore as the forum's magnet source, experimentations with the then new A8's led to C8's being recommended for a lot of guitars, including SG's.

As far as I know, I was the first forum member to try UOA5's when Addiction first got them. Put one into a C5 in an Epi LP, and was blown away by the tones. That should be a production pickup.

I liked C5's, but liked them more with UOA5's and A8's. My preferences in bridge PU's are for fuller, richer tones, which led me away from C5's.

I really dig the upper-mid agression of the standard ceramic Custom, personally. It's pretty scooped, but it is right where it needs to be: the lower mids. The bottom-end is deep but tight. It's an all-around great pickup.

I am the black sheep here. I don't like the C5. I prefer all the other incarnations of the duncan custom, but, man the C5 is really not my cup of tea. it sound harsh and shrilly to my ears.

this is a bit over the top. i had the EMG81 in a 10 lbs gibson LP custom Bridge spot and i liked it MUCH better then in my tremolo alder 25.5" scale guitar where it is now. the difference is HUGE. i would be glad if they would sound the same.
But yeah, the host guitar doesn't matter as much as with PAF style PUs.

The gibson LP custom now spots a screamin' demon which is my favorite PU for heavy sounds at the moment.
Another LP custom spots the Duncan Designed HB114 since last week, which should be more or less the sh-14 C5.
So far i prefer the Demon, but i only had one short session with the HB114 so far. But the Demon blew me away on the first test. It's everything i ever hoped for in a Humbucker (so maybe i am not really a humbucker guy:D)
with the low mids of those fat sounding guitars and lil heavier strings, none of them is thin sounding, despite the scoop. Maybe for leads you need to fattem them up with some extra gain.
Pegasus is also up for testing and maybe the 59'/C5 hybrid (could build it myself). mag swaping in all of them, too.
i expect the Pegasus to be quite similar to the C5...

totally confusing: upper or lower mids? or 1st std custom sh-5. 2nd custom 5 sh-14?

SH-5. Not a fan of the SH-14, though I must admit I don't have lots of experience with it.

I feel the SH-5 ceramic Custom has strong upper mids and/or lower treble and scooped lower mids.

:)

Re: Love for the SH/TB-14 “Custom 5”

Custom5 was just the ticket for a PRS SE with a fairly midrangey character. Perfect match.
I wouldn't hesitate to try it again in any guitar that was a bit mid-heavy.

Re: Love for the SH/TB-14 “Custom 5”

The C5, more than most pickups, seems to be a good 'fix a tonal problem'-type of pickup. I don't think I would like it in a balanced instrument.

Re: Love for the SH/TB-14 “Custom 5”

I've tried it in balanced guitars and didn't like it, way too scooped. I can see it being a good solution for a really mid-heavy guitar though (as Mincer has mentioned).
