I remember watching a clip of Sum 41 in the studio and they were using strips of masking tape to the same effect.
I'm with TGWIF on this one, though. I can see how they would be pretty handy if you're trying to get something down quickly in a studio and you're just not in the zone. Or if you're doing some complicated tapping passages, or pull-offs to open strings that are tricky to keep totally silent, however.
I feel the same way I do about these as I do Capos. They are both tools but if I don't have to use em I won't. Plus I don't like the look of extra stuff on my guitar. In this case I say a lot of people just need better muting technique like you said.

The 1st 2 sentences of this thread got my hopes up as a new way of killing unwanted noise (as in hum). Then I saw the pic... :grumble:
Seriously, I might give one a whirl as I've been dabbling with playing some slide. I don't want to mess with open tuning nor do I want to raise my action... yet.
