Love To Hear Again From The "Hybrid" Users?

I'm still lovin and usin 2 Hybrids in 2 totally different guitars..1 is a 59B/custom in my Les Paul and the other is a PGB/Custom in the bridge of one of my strats...These pickups have been great and cover alot of tonal ground for me and the way these pickups tonally fit into the context of my band and music styles..I May try either the A4 or an A5 magnet in my strat's Hybrid because I think it would mate better with the SSL1s I have in the other 2 positions...Both Hybrids currently have A2 magnets and measure about 11.3k...This is great stuff...

I found the hybrid to sound best with a 5 when using the coils from a 59b and a custom, and with the PG coil and the custom coil a II sounded best, but let your own ears decide?

Really? You're findings are interesting...I thought the pickups in both cases shared the same overall tonal vibe, but it's not a fair comparison in my case because I'm using 2 Hybrids but in seperate guitars? I agree that the A5 might be better suited in my PGB/C that's in my strat...Thanks for posting..

Did you both make these hybrids yourself following the old thread by bachtorock? Just wondering how long it took, and if you do a 59B/custom hybrid, won't you in effect get 2 hybrids from this coil swap? Just wondering if both hybrids then will be the same or if the coils werent matched in the first place.

it takes me about 10 minute to do two hybrids;) and yes you wind up with two just from the 2 pups(59b and a custom)
the one hybrid will have the hotter coil at the bridge and the other will have it at the front or towards the neck.
this is imprtant if you coil tap,the hotter coil sounds best towards the neck when splitting the pup:cool:

Yes..I actually spoke with Bachtorock about the mods and made the Hybrids myself...1 Custom and 1 59B or PGB gets you a total of 2 Hybrids...The Hybrid that has the Custom slug coil ends up being the pickup that has the higher resistance readings if you split your Hybrid...

The mod only takes about 10 minutes with the pickup out of the guitar, but I also wax potted mine so I wouldn't have to worry about microphonics...If you wanted to send me the pickups,I'd do the mods for you...Bachtorock recommends the A2 magnets and that's what I'm currently using in both of mine, but you could also try A3,A4 or A5 if you like.

I forgot the hybrid's charm came from an AII magnet. Has anyone tried the hybrid with an A5 or ceramic? Curious...

Ok another question is how different do the 2 hybrids sound? The Custom slug coil as opposed to the 59b slug coil on the other? Was the hybrid bachtorock presented, the slug 59b? I would think the custom coil would sound better with adjustable poles.

I made two hybrids using a PGb and a C. I currently use one in my Kramer which is made up from the PG screw pole bobbin, C slug bobbin and the PG's AII mag. The other hybrid uses the C's ceramic mag which I found gave a lot of the Customs characteristics, but a bit more rounded and a little less output.
I've yet to try one with an A5 mag, although I'm thinking of putting one together for my latest project axe.

I was wondering what happened to all you HYBRID converts!

Yes, I generally prefer the A2 in the Hybrid, but it sounds great with an A5 as well... slightly more aggressive and a tighter bass.
As WLL says... if you plan on coil tapping, the one with the Custom slug coil tends to work best...

Here's some interesting food for thought for the guys that understand it... as with most humbuckers, the Hybrid matches great with the loading characteristics of a 500k potentiometer... I almost always have the pickups wired to a Spin-A-Split to gradually roll out one coil... what this does is ALSO place a seperate load on the screw coil, therefore, the value of the Spin-A-Split pot can affect the overall tone of the pickup as well. Of course, you could get one of those NO-LOAD pots, but they are genrally only available in 250k...

Hello buddy....Most of us are still around...:D Funny but I've still not tryed either of my 2 hybrids with any other magnet other than the A2? ;)

The A5 with custom slug coil is sounding good in my Washburn. I will drop the A2 with custom screw coil in my strat when time permits

I went back the the hybrid after playing on a 9.1K EVH pickup for a while
of the two the HYBRID just zero's in better for VH's older tones.
I play in a tribute band, and i have to duplicate his tone as accurately as possible and i have the rig for it! and the hybrid with a alnico II magnet sounds best and more VH than the others, i have tried the custom-custom, 59b,demon,seth lover, antiquity,EVH,
and with my marshall the hybrid wins!:)
I want to tell others that IF the older VH tone is what you want in a pickup the HYBRID is the end all to your search;)
