low(er) wattage amp?

while i'm not going to be doing any gigs for a while, besides battle of the bands, i would like a lower wattage amp that can still be loud enough to use for gigs (mic'ed). the only reason i want a lower wattage watt amp is because i'm afraid i'm losing my hearing to my nomad :(.

now i play some classic rock some heavy rock some blues and i want to get into some stoner metal type stuff. along with the occasional bo diddley type stuff. i own a squeir strat and a barclay (harmony rocket) es-335 with a dearmond special design pickup in the neck and a burstbucker (i think) in the bridge. i would kinda like a combo but a head with a suggested cab is fine. as for features/controls all i really want a good dist for said types of music without using a pedal. a tone stack, gain, volume, and a presence. the basics. a good reverb would be nice. as for tube types either el34's or 6l6's are fine. i like my 6l6's in my nomad but i'm open to suggestions. it would be nice if it had a bias switch like the boogies but not a necissaty. if you think other tube types would be better that's cool.

i'm thinking 20-30 watts, 40 tops.

if i didn't include anything feel free to ask about it

thanks

edit: i know about attenuators but in don't really want to use one.

Crate V16. You can go with the V32 for the footswitchable channels, but that thing is bordering on stupid-loud for 30 watts.

Re: low(er) wattage amp?

how is the bluesbreaker? i might be able to get that if i sell my amp and my marshall cab. i'll check it out i just don't know

Re: low(er) wattage amp?

Yep, Dual el84's in the V16, a quad in the V32.

will that give me my want for stoner rock and the heavier styles without a pedal? if it doesn't that's cool, they don't cost that much. i'm looking for like a queens of the stone age sound in that department.

Re: low(er) wattage amp?

ear plugs are far cheaper and more effective in your situation!!!
Professional earplugs wich made custom for you are about 100 dolars!!!.every "loud" musician needs them.

El34 and 6l6 amps are going to be loud, unless you go single ended, they will be at least ~30 watts and many go a lot higher. Maybe you should look at el84 and 6v6 amps instead, they would be in the 15-22 watt area.

I agree with the Crate V16, you should try it out at your local GC (they have 'em). It uses a pair of el84s and at 16 watts should get you good tone at more reasonable volumes. 16 watts is still a loud amp though.

Re: low(er) wattage amp?

your probably going to want/need a fuzz pedal for stoner rock

yeah that's what i was thinking. a guy can hope though. i like the fuzz factory but that's just a wierd noise maker. any suggestions?

i'd probably just get a set of fleet farm earlpugs. i tend to lose small things like that. that's what i'm gonna do for a while.

Re: low(er) wattage amp?

How about the 45 watt Nomad with 4 EL84s? That is a nice sounding amp. I played a couple of gigs with one and I was very impressed with the tone and versatility. It's more wattage than your implied criteria states, but you don't really have to crank it to cut through the mix.

i forgot about the 45. thanks for reminding me. that'll be on the lookout

Re: low(er) wattage amp?

I've got a Hughes and Kettner edition tube 20 for sale. If you're interested or have any questions feel free to pm me.

Re: low(er) wattage amp?

I always thought a Big Muff would be good for that.

i never found enough dist. on hold on the one's i've played. course i wasn't playing with the right stuff at all: a strat, a fender tube amp, and a fender deluxe reverb :smack: . it's definately a cheap alternative to the fuzz factory.
