My understanding on the distance thing, was that volume increased the closer you got to the strings, but dynamics (and attack?) gradually become increasingly compressed. And vice-versa. The whole thing being a trade-off, and down to personal taste etc.
In more recent times, I've found myself more preoccupied with balancing positions with each other, than anything else.
