Re: Low Watt High Gain Amp??

I want that champ.

Wow that thing sounds killer.

There is no way that tone is coming out of a small box with an 8" speaker in it! Check out some of the P1-Extreme clips like this one. That's just two tubes! Scroll down here to find other P1-Xtreme clips.

Big tone from small packages :D

Germ...that sounded Awsome. Which amp was that? Type of power tubes? Wattage?

I could only listen through my computer speakers, but it sounded really good. Perhaps a tad dark, but again..could be my speakers. Nice compression and OD, but still retains some clarity.

Re: Low Watt High Gain Amp??

Lastwinj that clip sounds great, tell us more about it.

soldano esque preamp section, but my own invention in alot of ways, into a simple but effective PI and 6V6 power section. i used an emg85 bridge, a 1x12 loaded with a mojo copy of a celestion lead 80, shure PG57, and used goldwave recording software. wasnt terribly loud, maybe just enouigh to hear some speaker getting into it. kept the highs a little low so that when a lead was put on top, it would mix properly.

simple, no frills amp, for not alot of money. PM if you need more info.

Sounds alot like my 6505 but warmer with a little less clarity. Very very nice tone. I love the lowend that thing has, sort of plexi like.

Do you have a website?

Re: Low Watt High Gain Amp??

Soldano Atomic 16 or Astroverb. Might want to goose it with an OD pedal though.

Re: Low Watt High Gain Amp??

Here is another clip, this is out of a single 12" speaker, no pedals or added affects. I am so rusty with recording I wish I could add drums, so its is raw, at bedroom levels on 2 ish.

Re: Low Watt High Gain Amp??

I've been on a similar search for a long time and I've come to a conclusion - either use a good pedal or get a bigger amp that has a usable master volume. There's just not a lot of beef in small amp transformers to get a big gainy (quality) sound and there's not a big market for that kind of small-package gi-gain product anyway.

Boom!! :bowdown:

Tone is always subjective, and I never liked the tone of pedals, they always sound artificial to me. The 20watt amps I build have transformers that are twice the size of that Valve Jr. or a Blues Jr. So yes I agree with half of what you are saying that the size of transformers do matter, as well as the circuit, and speakers. Pedals and tone is like I said to each his own.

Bah! Go one step forward and build a cascode-boosted P1 Extreme!

For <$300, you can build an amp for more gain than you know what to do with. Click here for my demos.

I got a reply from Trace Davis today at Voodoo amps I enquired about that fender champ sound clip. here's a portion of the email.

~~~ Hi, can you tell me exactly what kind of fender vibro champ was used on
the sound clip you have?
@@@ A silver faced Vibro Champ with the Witchdoctor circuit installed,
however the only thing that was stock in that amp was the power transformer.
We are extremely close to releasing a 10 watt 1x12" Witchdoctor combo,
complete with a Celestion Vintage 30. It will be the same physical size as a
Fender Blues Jr.
~~~ I would like to have that sound. I want to buy an exact one and send it
to you for that moddification.

@@@ You are welcome to and the modifications are $xxx.xxplus
shipping/handling (again we only use the stock power transformer, everything
else is replaced). It may make more sense to wait a couple weeks and
purchase a 10 watt Witchdoctor, while we will make less money selling you a
10 watt Witchdoctor verses doing the mods I think your money is better spend
there.

Could you PM me with the price for the mod? So I could compare it to the 10 watt Witchdoctor when it comes out. Thanks

Re: Low Watt High Gain Amp??

I don't know if this was mentioned but you could do the Hughes and Kettner Edition Tube 20W. I think it's supposed to have a great overdrive.
