Low-wattage tube heads

...that don't cost an arm and a leg and sound decent. :D

What can you guys recommend? I can't really afford a Wells or a Cornford or a Marshall HW one... I was looking into the new Peavey Classic 30 head. I'd need 30W for this amp, absolute maximum. 20 watts would be ideal.

Re: Low-wattage tube heads

EDIT: oops you said head...I recommended a combo.

What's your budget?

Re: Low-wattage tube heads

Classic 30 seems to be the cheapest low wattage head out there new..... But i found a Classic 50 head used for like $250 a few years back... The C50 sounds different then the C30 does but if cost is an issue then used 50 watt heads maybe what you should look at.... besides the difference between a 50 watt head and a 30 watt head in Real Volume is not much...

I wish i could afford the new Hiwatt Custom 7..... a 7 watt Hiwatt!!!!

I'm not really looking at budget oriented decision right now... i just don't know whats out there for low-wattage heads other than the new C30 and the high end boutique stuff. I need to get edumacated.

30 watts maximum, please. I've got a Carvin Legacy that i can switch to 50W if need be but my point is LOW WATTAGE.

Re: Low-wattage tube heads

Marshall Silver Jubilee has a model that was switchable between 25 and 50 watts. Kind of rare and not necessarily cheap though.

That was actually for B2D.......

Takes tons of different tubes for whatever flavor ya' want...15watts lets ya' saturate the crap out of them.

Cool amp that can be had at a decent price.

True, the UniValve looks like a really cool concept, and apparently it sounds great.

Re: Low-wattage tube heads

B2D, I put a TS9 in front of a V32 combo and it screams. I run my Mesa rack and a 1984 2203 and that little Crate keeps up with them both.

It doesn't have the gain that the Mesa and Marshall have but the tone is all there.

Re: Low-wattage tube heads

A rack oriented system around a 20/20 is all I can think of besides the Crate.

Unless Mesa makes an F-30 head?

*EDIT* Yeah, they make an F-30 head. Those are ****ing rad, too!

The JCM 25/50 I do believe. Or maybe only the 25th anniversaries 25/50's had that? I dunno anyways I'd kill for a 25/50. Best sounding Marshalls ever imo.

Re: Low-wattage tube heads

hmmm I definitely have to say...

Vox AC30, Budda SuperDrive 18 or 30, Fender Blues Jr. Tweed with Jensen (I've played everything short of the HOB with one), and yes I played a 50w/25w Jubilee 2550 recently, and I think they sound nice fat and woody. They go for under $1000 since they are not nearly as in demand as the 100w, and they are in a small box.

mayyyyybe the Crate Palomino, played a friend's and it was cool.

Re: Low-wattage tube heads

id rather go for a 50 watts laney or engl.
their in the 700-1000 eur category

Re: Low-wattage tube heads

Matamp make a handwired head thats 2w and it's cheap (£250 or so). I've been after 1 myself for a while :D
