Lower end Ovation`s?

I`m looking into getting an acoustic(acoustic/electric) guitar and i really like the Ovation`s but i don`t want to spend too much $!!! Anyone own or have experience with their Celebrity series?

Re: Lower end Ovation`s?

I had a Celebrity Deluxe CS257 (shallow bowl).

Unplugged, it left a little to be desired, and I probably could have done better at that price point. The selling point was the on-board preamp just blew away everything else in that price range. It recorded very well plugged in. Of the acoustics I've owned, it was the best sounding through our PA at the few acoustic gigs I've done, granted, my Tak hasn't had its gig-cherry burst yet.

Ultimately I unloaded it because it didn't work for me. The hard almost V-like C shape neck and 1-5/8" nut width didn't work for me, especially since I incorporate a lot of finger style in my acoustic playing. I also had to live 90% of the time with the unplugged tone, and it simply sounded dead and uninspiring on its own.

Thanks! I`ll be looking for awhile before i make a decision but initially i liked Ovation`s because i find them more comfy because of the rounded backs (not to bulky like some other acoustics!)but there are alot of different companies to choose from in the Celebrities price range!

Re: Lower end Ovation`s?

I have a lower end ovation. I use it mostly during the summer when I work in a camp. I basically live in a tent all summer and the guitar is under my bed when not in use. It has held up through all kinds of weather, everything from wet, rainy days to scorching hot days. It still plays great. Like MikeS said, I'm sure you can get better at that price point, but I doubt other cheap guitars could take the abuse my ovation has.

I know you shouldn`t go by looks alone but the Ovation`s are so damn cool looking!!! And i was impressed with the Celebrities that i tried at the store,in sound and feel! I`ll probably go with a Celebrity unless a find a great deal on a used USA Ovation or something!

My main acoustic for a long time was a Celebrity. It's just a low end Ovation. Plays and sounds great. Stay away from the really shallow bowls, though. They don't have any bottom end.

Re: Lower end Ovation`s?

I visited the Hamer workshop in CT and they rent space from Ovation so I also got a quick tour of their place. I'm not really a fan of Ovations (far from it) because I like wooden guitars, but I took the tour because it was offered to me. The tour guide was the Ovation manager named Frank didn't really seem to be a guitar guy, just a fast-talking business sort of guy who was more interested in showing me all their CNC machines and tooling. They even have a machine that puts the binding on in about 30 seconds! There were hundreds of guitars in there!

The overall feeling I got from the Ovation tour was that they are a plastic and aluminum guitar with a wooden covering, made by factory workers by the thousands. Needless to say, it really turned me off to the brand. On the other hand, I know from experience that the construction and materials make them pretty tough and rugged.
