LP Custom Look at half the price

Re: LP Custom Look at half the price

No ebony, or block inlays. It doesn't look like a Custom to me, but if those things don't matter, I am sure it is a nice LP.

yeah, not blocks and yes, I know it is a standard and not a custom.. (second part not aimed at you Mincer..) I was just pointing out that this gives "Most" of the appearance at a lesser cost.. I still prefer the custom with the ebony and blocks, but not for 2k more.

Re: LP Custom Look at half the price

I suspect as woods get more scarce, things like Richlite (which I am not really that opposed to) will be more common. I can see it starting with less-expensive necks and bodies. My thing is...if you are spending like $4k on a guitar, you should get the woods and hardware you want, but that's a whole 'nother topic.

Re: LP Custom Look at half the price

My thing is not one damn person on this forum, Les Paul fan or not, EVER woke up and said:

"You know what I would really like? If there was a Les Paul, that had triple body binding, but only on the top and gold hardware, except with like crown inlays instead of blocks."

So get your heads out of your @$$es.... This guitar is Gibson Jack@$$ery at its finest.

Gibson people DID ask for:
- I want one just like Slash with A2P's
- I want a Jimmy Page replica
- I want an Ace Frehley replica from Alive II
- I want a Les Paul with Pickups like PG's or Seths
- I want a Les Paul, but like about half as thick
- I want a Studio but with all gold hardware
- I want a Les Paul with push/pul taps

But no one ever asked for that. They sat around Gibson, looking at junk over-order binding and hardware and said "Let's throw that crap on a guitar and charge $4k for it."

Re: LP Custom Look at half the price

Classy looking guitar, a mix of Custom & Std. I like it. As far as pricing, I wouldn't expect it to be with the budget models. The Gibson guitars I think were pointless were the Reverse V, Zoot Suit SG's, and the V2. Way too much money went into the development & production of those dogs.

Re: LP Custom Look at half the price

For a high quality axe with the appointments of a Custom, personally I'd be looking at 80s-90s Japanese LP Customs. Higher-end series from Greco, Burny, Tokai, or even Orville-By-Gibson. They compare very favorably with Gibsons and they're still remarkably affordable considering how good they are. The only problem is, often you don't have the opportunity to try them out first. Still, the build quality of the best models is extremely high and quite consistent. I've had very good luck with three of these. Only one is a Custom, but all three are great guitars.

I think you're making some good points here.
The big problem with Gibson is that they need to make guitars people want to buy, not guitars they want people to buy.
I love my LP, but I had to replace the nut with a quality bone nut. And I changed out the crappy burstbucker pickups.
I think if they want to charge the type of money they do, they can't cheap out on the components.
We have access to so many GOOD guitar makers today. We can literally get anything we want, custom made to our exact specs for what Gibson is pricing their Standard at.
There is absolutely no way any production model guitar should be priced at Gibson prices. You can an absolute top of the line Strat for $1700....Gibson wants almost twice that.

Re: LP Custom Look at half the price

I like it a lot, I like multiple binding on solid colours & plain tops & single binding on figured tops.
There's nothing more garish than figured tops on LP customs & solid coloured standards just need that little more, this guitar seems to have got it just right.
It would have been nice if the binding had been yellowed.

A few years ago Gibson did a classic custom which I thought was a cool as ****, looks like they're kinda going for the same vibe

Re: LP Custom Look at half the price

Bah- typical half-@$$ed Gibson design. Solving a problem no one had with a guitar no one wants by slapping a goofy set of features together, patting themselves on the back, then over pricing g it.

Kinda like what they did with the LP custom '63 es335 SG, es345 es355 non reverse firebird yeah those guitars suck

Re: LP Custom Look at half the price

If you want a Les Paul Custom look, then buy a used Heritage H-157.

Even new, they are thousands less than their Gibson counterparts.

Re: LP Custom Look at half the price

Speaking of Gibson Custom & outrageous upcharges...

In the early 2000s I was thinking of ordering a SG Standard Historic, but I wanted it in Pelham Blue instead of the typical Heritage Cherry. My thinking was that this shouldn't be a big deal since they use that color on lots of other historic models. I was quoted an upcharge of $750 merely to paint the guitar in a different solid color than they usually use. It goes without saying that I ended up buying something else. So much for "Custom".

Was cool as $h!t enough for you to buy one now or then? And priced equally cool?

Didn't think so....

Re: LP Custom Look at half the price

I already had a nice LP so it would have been superfluous, if I didn't have a LP I probably
would have bagged one as indicated by my statement saying I thought they were as cool
as. Id take one over a ridiculously priced frehley custom.
