LP pickguard dings?

I just got a Gibson Les Paul Studio. I took the pickguard off, and noticed a dent in the finish. On the surface of the pickguard, there's a silver screw that faces down towards the body of the guitar, which connects the small metal bracket to the pickguard. Underneath the pickguard, there's a small nut (affixed to the screw I just mentioned.) The nut/screw has been in contact with the actual finish, leaving this noticable mark. I've hardly played it so I doubt it's due to any excessive playing. Is this normal? It seems strange that they would make it so the nut/screw assembly would DIRECTLY contact the body.

Re: LP pickguard dings?

Fairly normal. It happens when the screw on the side of the body is drilled to far from the binding (toward the back of the guitar). QC on some of that stuff is hit or miss from the factory. If you plan on leaving the guard on, it's really not an issue.

Re: LP pickguard dings?

The bracket is usually screwed into the spot between the binding and the mahogany of the body.

Re: LP pickguard dings?

This one is actually an LP Studio. I don't know if that makes a difference. I want to keep the pickguard on, but I'm just worried it's going to gradually bore a whole in the damn thing. In the future, if I ever want to take it off, doesn't Gibson do something where they'll repair minor dings and stuff like that?

Re: LP pickguard dings?

1. sub a shorter screw (might be hard to find a suitable cosmetic replacement similar to the Gibson stuff, tho)
2. get some of those little adhesive 1" foam squares, and make a little pad for the back of the pickguard that supports it at the same height...when the brackets get a little weak or too shallow, you need something to keep it from hitting the top (a major issue on something like an L5, you can bet).
