LP Special P-90 Question

I've got an LP Special with 2 P-90's. The neck is an unknown P-90, it's been in the guitar since I've owned it. The bridge is a Duncan Custom P-90. The bridge sounds great, the neck sounds great- however when they're on together they sound out of phase.

Normally, you'd just say 'reverse your hot and ground,' right? But this is a single conductor with a braided ground.

Any ideas?

Re: LP Special P-90 Question

Are they both co-axial cables? If so, you can still reverse one. It's just a little "messy" in terms of soldering. Electrically, it's no different than any other reversal.

To make it easier, you might attach short extensions to the braid and center.

I tried that, I soldered a lead to the pot cover and a lead to the pot lug- it works the way it should- but it doesn't work the other way around (with the "ground" to hot and "hot" to ground). I did and undid it twice- just to make sure I wasn't coming up with a bad solder joint.

Re: LP Special P-90 Question

You can try flpping the magnet. Take the pickup cover off, unscrew the baseplate from the bobbin, & reverse the polarity of the magnet. You can check your work by using a compass before and after the operation to determine the magnet's polarity. (I can't remember for sure, but you might have to flip the coil over too).

I think Artie was talking about re-soldering the coaxial at the pickup end, swapping the wires that come out of the pickup coil bobbin. That will work, & you don't have to unscrew anything.

If you want to make life easier & want to be able to do other mods, such as serial/parallel wiring and phase switching, locate a piece of 2 conductor shielded wire to replace the stock single conductor wire.. At the pickup end, solder the shield to the pickup's base plate lug, & solder the 2 conductors to the 2 wires coming out of the bobbin. Do not connect either of the bobbin wires to the baseplate. You can groung one of the leads at the pot end when you re-install the pickup.

Thanks BBB. I wasn't sure about the magnet flipping thing. I know of people doing it, I'll give it a shot!

Re: LP Special P-90 Question

For single conductor wiring, I always soldered extensions to the braided wires. But that's just me....

Actually, I wasn't, but I wish I'd thought of that. :)

Re: LP Special P-90 Question

in a p90 there are usually two magnets (some times more) so be careful
