LP stop tail question

After having returned to the electric guitar scene after almost 20 years I've noticed something that I have not seen in the past. I was reviewing Joe Bonamassa's gear set-up when I noticed how he strings at least some of his Les Paul's. It would appear he threads the strings through the stop tail from the pick-up side, then wraps them over the top of the stop tail and then on to the bridge as normal.

What's the story here? What are the advantages and dis-advantage of this set-ups?

Thanks.

Re: LP stop tail question

What he said.... A lot of top wrapping has to do with the style if bridge on the guitar. An ABR type of bridge. IMHO offers a better string angle. The string guides over the saddle high enough that the string doesn't rest on the bridge frame. On a Nashville style bridge the string can rest on the bridge frame if you string it normally do top wrapping can stop the string from resting on the bridge. I have both style bridges and I prefer to string my guitar normally. The top wrapping as Dr vegetable said tends to make the string tension easier, but I like stronger string tension especially on Gibsons
