LP Studio Binding

I love my Gibson Lp Studio except the fact that it doesnt have binding...
Is it possible to add binding to a guitar which is already constructed???
If it is, im gonna try to find a luthier...(which is a hard thing to do in my country:))
Is this a stupid idea?
Would it be expensive?
Any comments?

Not a stupid idea, but it probably would be very expensive. The binding itself is very cheap, but the amount of work to route the wood might make it not worth it.

Than again, I don't know how much it would cost, or how much time it would actually take. It could be a great deal actually.

I saw GMW guitars do it- they used to have a pic on their website. They converted a Studion into a Standard.

Don't know how much it cost, but considering standards are going for over $2,000 new, it may be something to look into if you already have a studio you like

without a complete refinnish it would be extremely tricky.... and very costly anyways... use it as is...

You could always put a thin line of white masking tape around the edge of your guitar.

Or use that white-out tape, that stuff is awesome.

I wouldn't add binding. It makes the body less comfortable, and makes the sidemarker dots on the neck harder to see. Looks good though. But personally, I like how the LP Studio looks.

You could just have the guitar refinished in a faux binding.

Meaning leaving the maple tops edge just a natural clear coat so it looks like binding.

Someone over at HC did this about a year ago.
Refinished a LP Studio in a silverburst with faux binding.

Yea i like that faux binding idea...
And it wouldnt cost much too...
Then what am i gonna do with the neck binding?
Is there a cheap way to make it look like the real thing?

Could i just use some kind of a paint?
I dont wanna tape it.I want it to be permanent.

Neck binding is less important than body binding to me but if it is posible, why not...

Neck binding is less important than body binding ???

Thats the first time I've heard a comment like that honestly. Neck binding makes a big difference in the feel of the neck in my opinion. Body binding is just for show and makes no difference if its there or not.

I've had LP's with single binding and some with triple binding, makes not one lick of difference in how the guitar plays or sounds. A bound or unbound neck is a difference you can notice even with your eyes closed though.


For what its worth as well, even though a LP studio isn't exactly the most expensive guitar around, its still a pretty nice instrument and not cheap. I'd really think twice before you went painting some "binding" on it.

Painting on a faux binding is going to look about as good as those snap on wheel covers that are supposed to look like alloy rims or wood grained plastic on the dashboard thats supposed to give it a luxury car look.

It'll cost you out the ass to do actual binding, and if you apply the tape well and clearcoat it it'll last.

How does neck binding affect tone? I don't own a bound neck guitar so I'd like to know. Does the same apply to the headstock?

one of the reasons i love the Studios is the fact that the frets go to the edge of the fingerboard.... sure an lp with binding looks better but i'd oddly be more comfortable playing on a Studio without the edge binding on an LP Standard or Custom.

i would think the best thing to do is if you really want an LP Standrad with all the binding save your money up and sell the Studio... use both the sums of cash to get the real axe you want

Having the top and neck rebound (and the neck of course reftretted in the process) will put you out a few hundred dollars.... actually quite close to what a used Studio costs, primarily because the entire axe will have to be refinished, and to put binding on the neck the frets will have to be pulled and the neck refretted afterwards.

The refinish and refret alone are about 5-600$ depending on who does it, and the binding installation will of course also cost a bit.

I´d save the cash, sell the studio and buy a standard ;)

I'd say leave it as it is, and play the hell out of it cuz chances are its gonna cost you an arm and a leg. Not to mention if you ever decide to sell it your gonna be out the money you put into it for the binding. Just my opinion....
