LP studio - to buy or not to buy

Guitar in question is this

I'm considering it, but I have literally no experience with LP studio's. Price roughly would be 1000CAD. Seller says there's authentic papers and a gigbag included. If I were to get this one I'd sell the Epi I'm currently rockin on.

It has P90's if I'm correct. I dont know if I like those yet. Opinions?

It has mini humbuckers, which means you should definitely, definitely buy it.

Re: LP studio - to buy or not to buy

I'm not too sure that Gibson produced, in 2010, Les Paul Studio models with mini-humbuckers, but then, I don't pay that much attention to what they do.

If you can make sure it's the real deal and it really is a special run made for a certain store/country, then sure, why not go for it? If it's what you want and you're dead sure it's worth it, then do it.

But first, make sure it's the real deal.

Re: LP studio - to buy or not to buy

What Epi are you currently playing. The reason I ask is that I own a LP Studio and an Agile 3100. I wish I had bought the Agile first. If I had I would never have spent the $1320 on the Studio. Except for the pickups the Agile is a far better guitar in all respects and that may be true of your Epi as well. Aside from Gibson product loyalty the specs tell the story.

AGILE
1. Real mop inlays
2. Ebony fret board
3. Flamed maple top
4. Binding everywhere
5. Pro set up right out of the box
6. Grover tuners
7. Low price

Studio
1. Plastic fretboard inlays
2. Rosewood fretboard
3. Plain top
4. No binding
5. No set up
6. Cheesy vintage tuners with ugly green buttons
7. Priced 2X comparable guitars.

If the specs on your Epi are better than the Studio you would probably be far better off to spend a couple hundred bucks and upgrade the one you have. Name and country of manufacture are meaningless. Follow the specs.

This is the best Agile vs LP post i have ever seen. Good job!

I say check the serial. It may be one of those new P90's with replaced pups.

Yeah but there are other things you have to consider--sure the agile has a flamed maple top, but is it a big thick one like gibson uses? Or a thin one with a flame veneer over it?

Does binding change tone?

Do inlays change tone?

Does the Agile use the same quality of fretwire? That changes tone a lot.

Does the Agile use the same grade mahogany/rosewood/maple as the gibson?

These are the things that REALLY matter. To me, anyways. Lots of things look good on paper...

I've sent an email to Gibson. From what I can gather from the measley bits of info on the net it's a guitar that was built specially for Thomann.de to have mini-humbuckers.

....and I also bought it. Still putting it through the tests but I'll get back to you guys soon enough ;)

Re: LP studio - to buy or not to buy

I'd love to have it, but not for that price. $200 less, then yes indeed.

Price comparison is hard as the dollar changes and all that. I ultimately got it for 800 USD (dollar being quite strong now...and Canadian even better ;) )

Nice. Exactly what I thought it would be worth if I was the one thinking about buying it. Hope it works out for you. I love LP Deluxes. You basically have a Deluxe Studio now. Pretty neat.
