LP Studio's

Re: LP Studio's

Its more comfortable. Fits my hands better. Allows me to move around the neck free when I need to, but still allows me to do crazy chords and not get clustered. I guess it's a lil thicker and feels the closest to a standard

Re: LP Studio's

Cool...that's very helpful. I like them thicker too.
So...at the risk of being "that guy with the endless stream of stupid questions"...do the Studio's have the 50's necks?

Re: LP Studio's

The normal Studio, meaning non-faded and not the Deluxe, have the '59 profile which is thicker than the 60's profile. That is the profile I prefer on them since I have large hands.

Re: LP Studio's

Got it. It's interesting, I don't have large hands but prefer large necks. Actually, that's not that interesting now that I think about it.
I had a Yamaha SBG700s that was like a Louisville Slugger. That was a little too fat. I traded a Fender Tele FMT...sounded awesome but to thin and to flat for me. Ibanez Sabers...same thing. Nice guitars capable of some great sounds out of those...can't do the shredder neck thing.
Very informative thread for me. Thanks everyone!

Re: LP Studio's

Also like many said play as many as you can. I almost picked up a banging studio silverburst, but it was extremely light due to half the body has a hallowspot, where as the delux was heavier and had less hallow spots. instead of one giant spot it was swiss cheese style. if that makes sense

The day i get a Les Paul, it will be a faded brown studio like this one !

Re: LP Studio's

Was checking these out today at Sam Ash as I needed some random stuff. I was surprised at how light the Studio is. I guess the chambered body has to do with that. I also preferred the neck to the slightly thinner neck of the Faded's.
Anyone know the skinny on older Studio's v newer ones? Have they always been chambered? Always been 490/498's?
I am gettin' closer...then again that Yamaha Mike Stern is callin' my name : )

Re: LP Studio's

Chambering began in late 2006. Pickups have always been 490/498. with some exceptions. For instance, before becoming part of the regular Studio line, the Vintage Mahogany had Burstbucker Pros, and the Studio Lite, had 496/500 ceramics. The Gem series had P-90s. The more recent Studio Deluxe has a Burstbucker 3, and '57 Classic.

For some other details, see my earlier post.

I never liked the faded brown model. Looks too much to me like a book shelf or coffee table. A nice coffee table, granted, but still a table.

Re: LP Studio's

I'm doing the jazz/blues thing and I think that a chambered body would be nice for that. I used to have a Fender Esprit with chambered body and that was sweet. Of course I don't know if the LP is chambered to be "musical" or just to be light. Hard to tell in the store with a bunch of 17 year-old Zakk wannabes "shredding" out of the pocket, flat on 11. No offense to teens...there are some talents out there...just not hanging out at SA today.

Start a rumor that there's a 2-for-1 T-shirt sale at Hot Topic.

Re: LP Studio's

The chambering was done for weight, and done so to (supposedly) not affect the way the guitar sounds. However, It does indeed affect the sound. Whether or not it's that's a good thing, is purely subjective.

I think it does add a bit more of an acoustic quality, when played unplugged. Through a cranked Marshall? It may not even be noticeable to most people.

I suggest forgetting about all of it, and just play as many as you can. You'll know it when you find the right one. If you can, go in the morning, while all of the teenmonsters are in school. If not, go with the dead guys suggestion. That should clear them out. ;)

Re: LP Studio's

How's that? They come with the exact same Gibson USA pickups that Gibson uses in all of the other Les Pauls.

The 490R/498T is lackluster. The 490R is boring and the 498T can do some things well but isn't PAF-class and hence not what I expect to be default in a Les Paul.

BTW, the vintage mahogany models still have a cap, but it is mahogany, not maple. If they didn't they couldn't swiss-cheese or chamber the things (all are).

Re: LP Studio's

Actually started looking at some MIJ Tokai's that seem universally loved and are about the same $ as a Studio. So many choices...that's a double-edged sword.

The cheaper Tokais are not MIJ and not mahogany either. Very generic Korean and Chinese guitars. Of course quality is still better than Gibson USA, fretwork in particular but they are just those generic mainland Asia klampfen.

That may be, but it doesn't change the fact that they are still the exact same pickups used in other Les Pauls, like the Custom, and Supreme. That's the only point I was making- Nothing to do with their sound. ;)

Right. The same as the old Customs.

Re: LP Studio's

This is the only thing I hate about this forum. Between this thread, and "discovering" Joe Bonamassa, I now want an LP.

I need another guitar like, . . . you know. :banghead:

EVERYBODY needs a Les Paul. It's like a rule, er something. :D

Re: LP Studio's

Ok . . . I have a friend who has one. If I play that occasionally, does that count?
