Luthite?

What type of wood does this stuff sound like? Is it very light/heavy? what does it look like, without a chrome finish (ala joe satriani)?

Thanks

I tried it out for a while but ...

This is a product that should stay with Basses IMO (and even then) ... I found it tight and a little lifeless. Haven't seen the natural colour.

As for weight ... this is heavy stuff. I carry around a 11 pounder and I found the Ibanez bass to be bugging me with the weight. Not something I'd like to use for a 2 hour gig (let along some that go on for 5-6 hours).

Is this an MDF, or a plastic is the question I want to know

I guess my experience was different than prophet's...

Well, not like I'm an expert on Luthite though.

Played an Ibanez EDB for a whole 30 seconds, very light, very resonant, like, annoyingly vibrating.

Ibanez Luthite is an orange color under the finish... I think one year's line of EDs had a orange flare color, that's what it looks like.

Can't speak to the sound, though I think I want an EDA every time I look at one, then I have to smack myself (must have bongo!).

i played a couple of Ibanez guitars featuring this meterial, and i was turned off by it every time. im not a purist, and am very open to new stuff/metrials/sounds, but the resonance of this meterial is aiming to zero.
when playing that guitar unplugged it was obvious this guitar has no "real" sound - this is common in alot of Ibanez guitars i've played.
the design seems to rely more on high output pickups then on tone.

there are alot of great sounding substitutes for wood, like Graphite and Carbon fibre, but all the luthite guitars i've played were not so great at all (and i should point out that they were only Ibanez- maybe other guitar makers have put this metrial to better use).
