Lynch, DeMartini, EVH what amp?

Does anyone play in a cover band and get these tones..... what must I do get a freakin plexi and mod it? Soldano? I got a JCM800 2203

Re: Lynch, DeMartini, EVH what amp?

Soldano was/is used by all of those at one time. Depends on the eras you want.

YOu can have that 800 modded by voodoo to sound like their tones. All three were on my list of wanted tones with my 800 that they modded

Re: Lynch, DeMartini, EVH what amp?

Really how did it turn out? I know they add a 5th pre but they have to voice it to be comparable. what else is involved. does it sound different? Brown sound?

Re: Lynch, DeMartini, EVH what amp?

ADA MP-1!!!

I usually get comparable tones with my JCM2000 DSL50. I'd say any el-34 based amp with a good OD will get you close!!!

Re: Lynch, DeMartini, EVH what amp?

According to Scott Splawn, his amps get EVH in 1st Gear OD1 and Lynch in 2nd Gear.

Re: Lynch, DeMartini, EVH what amp?

I use a Soldano Hot Rod 50+ in my current rock project. I'm going for a more open, 70s kind of tone personally, but I've messed around with it at higher gain levels and it's definitely a great 80's wheedle-guitar amp. I'd say it can do Lynch best out of the three players you mention. I've found it pretty guitar sensitive: I can get a more Lynch-esque tone by using brighter, heavier bolt on guitars, whereas I get a more VH vibe from mahogany gibson-style guitars.

Re: Lynch, DeMartini, EVH what amp?

MAybe a 5150 - for all of them. Radically different eq's though. I'm thinking multi-effects for all of the sound. Way easier and more flexible than one amp. VH1,2,etc, vs 5150, Tooth & NAil vs Back for the Attack vs Lynch mob, Ratt: 6 WAYYYYYYYYY different fuzz noises / EQ shapes. If you don't mind twiddling knobs in a big way....other wise preset those suckers. I mean, just VH one goes with plate verb at various levels, delay, phaser, flange! Lynch does Harmonizers....sheesh!

Re: Lynch, DeMartini, EVH what amp?

I'd like to add confusion by throwing in the VHT Deliverance and CL
as well as the Bogner Ecstasy.

I would say the Soldano IF AND ONLY IF you run a Marshall with it - that's what a lot of these guys did.

5150 for mid 80s lynch and EVH - sorry, can't see it. Not brown enough, not sweet in the low mids and snarly in the upper mids like a Soldano or cranked Marshall. I would say the 5150 wins the competition for saturation, good modern metal amp.

Re: Lynch, DeMartini, EVH what amp?

If you want to NAIL the clone you'll want to search high and low for the best Marshalls and have switchable mods put in them, but alternatively you'll get a great sound that comes close from a Splawn amp.

Re: Lynch, DeMartini, EVH what amp?

i run a splawn QR and play in an 80s metal cover band...we cover lynch/demartini/evh/etc...

the splawn is the way to go

Re: Lynch, DeMartini, EVH what amp?

If you're playing at home mostly, don't spend money to try and tame a 100W 2203 down to home practice volumes. It's the wrong amp for the occasion, plain and simple. That amp is made for competing with a heavy handed drummer in a rehearsal space.

Since you already have a Marshall cab, I'm assuming, just buy a modeling head like a Valvetronix, Flextone, Vetta, HD147 etc. They sound better than tube amps at bedroom levels. Use the 100W Marshall when you're able to crank it up to 5-6.........and for most people, that's not very often.

Re: Lynch, DeMartini, EVH what amp?

Same opinion as Joe. My first thought after reading the title and reading the first post was "not another one"...LOL, but then I thought, modeller. Without shelling out the bucks for another high powered amp that won't sound near as good at low volumes, the modellers are a good investment. Wide variety of tones right there in one amp. I can get early Lynch through late EVH and everything in between with my AD50 combo. Granted, it's not a "dead on" copy but the base is there. The rest is up to the player to capture the vibe to make it all work.

Re: Lynch, DeMartini, EVH what amp?

5150s can def do "the brown sound" . Speakers and tweaks (not mods, just tweaking the controls) are key. Check out VHolics clips if you have any doubt.

That said, if I wanted a modded marshall, I'd go David Bray and Splawn a close second....Brays mods are a bit more soft and classic toned, Splawns are more agressive and tight...ultimately I'd want something inbetween...which I have not heard yet.

Here are the 5150 combo settings i've been using lately: Lead pre- little before 5, mid-4, high between 3 and 4, resonance- slightly before 6, and presence-8. Again, i change the settings depending on the guitar/PU and also for tone experiments but i usually keep them pretty close to these.

Hehehe!! I love those clips. Makes you think twice about what you're listening to.

Running a Soldano with an older Marshall would definitely be a killer combination, something I'm looking at doing myself.

Would you use one for the rythm, one for leads, or would run them both at the same time, what cabs would you use ????

Re: Lynch, DeMartini, EVH what amp?

Both, same time. Get the woody thunk from the Marshall and the open bite and gain from the soldano. I'd probably go for greenbacks for the marshall and v30s for the soldano.

This is all fairly hypothetical, at least for live. The minute I start using a rig like this is the minute someone else carts it around for me.

My working compromise: use the gain channel of the soldano with the master full up and the gain very low. then hit the front end with my G2D classic (plexi emulator) set to low gain and the mid knob boosted to 9 o'clock.

Re: Lynch, DeMartini, EVH what amp?

I've yet to hear a great modeller. Seen people talk up the Vetta (mucho $$$) but every clip I've heard sounds horrible (especially the clips from Line 6 :laugh2: ) Also, I don't know if people are actually listening to the record when duplicating tones but often time you'll see someone post EVH clips (or whatever) and, although it might sound decent, not really match at all - too bassy, etc.

If you want bedroom level, either get an attenuator or a low wattage tube amp and run a nice preamp in front such as a JMP-1, Pirahna, Triaxis, etc. Another great thing about this is that you just have to switch to a higher wattage power amp for gigs.

With that said, every clip I've heard of the Splawn sounds like the pinnacle of a modded Plexi/JCM800. I don't think I can hold out much longer on picking up a Splawn. Damn you GAS.
