Lynch, DeMartini, EVH what amp?

Re: Lynch, DeMartini, EVH what amp?

You mean KT88 in the poweramp, and just crank master and preamp to eleven even if it only goes to ten?

Re: Lynch, DeMartini, EVH what amp?

Still, we're not answering the questions: If you're in a cover band - how do you get those tones? I think any of the amps mentioned can get a good metal-god-shred-tone. I just don't see any one amp getting them all. Those guys all play the same "game" just in way different "parks" I don't see it happenning in a credible way to the audience without some serious eq/effects switching. These days, I'd hafta say the vetta/flextone head is the best solution I've heard. And a g-force/major on the floor....

Don't let the my-tone-is-sacred deal get in the way of the audinces enjoyment!

Re: Lynch, DeMartini, EVH what amp?

Actually, he did, he used a Peavey Classic 50 on One Live Night and on the Dysfunctional tour, I remember him saying that he really liked the Classics. The XXX was his signature amp until him and Peavey had a falling out. I think an ad ran for 1 month before they pulled it. I had one mag that had it in it, I need to try to find that again. They got together to try again a few years ago, the amp was supposed to be called the Brahma, it's now called the Penta. I saw him in Denver in '02 (I think) and he was using XXXs with Genz Benz cabs.

Check here.

That response was more toward a 5150 nailing the tone of Dokken years in the 80s and first mob album. I was writing from work, he-he.

Re: Lynch, DeMartini, EVH what amp?

one common thread between the three players in question....

They all recorded with an old Plexi in their glory years....oh sure they use a little this here and there and maybe don't use them nowadays...but Classic Lynch..Classic EVH, Classic Warren is Plexi.

Alot of the difference you hear from one album to the next (especially with Ratt) is studio "magic" (or BS as I prefer). How the amps were mic'ed, post EQ, effects, blah blah blah.

Re: Lynch, DeMartini, EVH what amp?

I'd like to add confusion by throwing in the VHT Deliverance and CL
as well as the Bogner Ecstasy.

I would say the Soldano IF AND ONLY IF you run a Marshall with it - that's what a lot of these guys did.

5150 for mid 80s lynch and EVH - sorry, can't see it. Not brown enough, not sweet in the low mids and snarly in the upper mids like a Soldano or cranked Marshall. I would say the 5150 wins the competition for saturation, good modern metal amp.

I agree with you, dude. VHT is THE amp right now.

Lynch used a modded Soldano SLO-100 in the early 90's, during the first and second Lynch Mob records.

Lots of people say EVH ripped off Soldano's gain circut and put it in the 5150. I don't want to get into that.

Re: Lynch, DeMartini, EVH what amp?

As far as getting all of their tones -- it's as simple as VHT.

Which model you say? It depends what tubes you want: I'd say, go for the UL with KT88's if you want the best from both worlds of EL34 and 6L6; get the CLX 100 if you want solid EL34 or 6L6 tones. Both amps have three seperate channels, graphic EQ, effects loop, and more.

Use the first channel for cleans; the second channel for crunch; the third channel for heavy crunch or lead; and if you need a solo boost on top of that, get an OD pedal.

And if that's not enough, just get an ADA MP-1 and combine it with one of the numerous VHT poweramps; 2/50/2, 2/90/2, 2100, 2150.

Buy a VHT 50 or 100CL. I don't see a need for the CLX. Use the green channel (gain cranked) for the EVH tone and the red channel for the Lynch tone. Done deal. If you need a clean channel, use the volume on the guitar on the green channel or use the footswitch to switchout a couple gain stacks.

You could do the exact same thing with a Bogner 101B but have a real clean channel. Use the blue channel for EVH and red for Lynch/DiMartini.

I own both amps so I know how they sound and both would work well.

Re: Lynch, DeMartini, EVH what amp?

I can tell you that more than one person has told me Lynch used Soldanos and Bogners hidden behind some of his stacks, esp his Peaveys. I think Lynch goes with whatever is hot - he also appears on the Mojave site now.

I have heard the same with Eddie. Some people swear he used his 5150s, others have said he was really using his Marshalls and Soldanos behind all those stacks. Even EVH's tour rig sites show a Soldano and Marshall half stack with his 5150. I just don't like the 5150's all that much, not that they aren't road worthy, and solid workingman's amps.

I can tell you, I have trouble choosing between the Framus Dragon and VHT. Since I already have the Dragon, I see no reason to move to a VHT and lose any dough, but I can tell you the VHT's have me MIGHTY impressed.

I think you can get amazing tones with a Bogner Ecstasy and Shiva - no doubt. They are wonders on stage and in the studio. I have limited experience with the VHT's but I feel like they ARE the NEW AGE tone for Marshall enthusiasts, and could cover the tones discussed here. I think it's a very underrated amp company.

If I had $1500-3000 to spend right this second, on ONE amp - Bogner and VHT would top that list in that order.

Re: Lynch, DeMartini, EVH what amp?

After the UGD in Santa Barbara, a few of us forum bros saw him sit in with the Atomic Punks at a small club in Santa Barbara. He played "Aint Talkin Bout Love" through the regular guitarist's 5150.. one word.. AMAZING!

The band also did a couple of old Dokken tunes with him too. You should have seen the look on the faces of the younger folks that were there.. pretty stoked to say the least.

Re: Lynch, DeMartini, EVH what amp?

It's no secret that Lynch recorded with Soldanos, same with Eddie (For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge is a SLO100, a track or two a 5150 prototype). Live rigs though, EVH's has been the 5150's since that tour, 3 of them to be exact (one feeds a cabinet by Alex). Can't say if Lynch toured with Soldano's or not with Dokken in the late 80's but he may have with Lynch Mob.

Re: Lynch, DeMartini, EVH what amp?

You can hear Lynch at the UGD here

He was playing through a Plexi 1987x reissue with a Mass attenuator and one of his signature pedals.
