I have a real disdain for "Protools" and Digidesign... stems back many, many, years...

Before you go down the "Toolz" road... have you looked into running Cubase or other of the other DAW's with something like a Motu or Presonus box for I/O?
I'd say, that unless you really "need" PT to be compatible with the rest of the world... bandmates, producers etc. PT is just NOT worth the hassles... Not so much hassle in learning to use it, but perpetual upgrades of both hardware & software not to mention other things...
I've been making records for over 10 years w/o Toolz... and the one I finished a few months ago had at least four different software platforms spread over Macs & PC's... no issues.
