Mad Scientist Hybrid Question Thread

Aceman

I am your doctor of love!
Let's say, just for $h!ts and giggles, I want to tamper with the nature of the universe.

I'd like to create a "Duncmarzio" pickup, Or a "Larry Duncan"

1. What individual coils from each brand would select
2. WHY would you choose those two coils? What sound-tone would it give you?
3. What would you name it?

* Anyone who has done this - please chime in. I'm looking for vision and imagination, though, not experience.

Re: Mad Scientist Hybrid Question Thread

Having not measured them... Would you have to modify the baseplate to get them to both mount?

Re: Mad Scientist Hybrid Question Thread

Let's figure out WHAT we could do before we tackle "how"

Re: Mad Scientist Hybrid Question Thread

If the screw coil stays put in its baseplate and the slug coil gets swapped it would probably work easily.

I say JB/Super D hybrid.

Ooh Ooh Ooh how about a DSonic/Invader!?!?

Actually that DSonic/Invader sounds really cool. We call it the Sonic Invader. Add a triple shot.Just think of the possibilities!!!! I don't even like loud humbuckers and this sound cool.

Re: Mad Scientist Hybrid Question Thread

I made several random hybrids for Blueman a few years back. He sent me a bunch of Gibsons, DiMarzios and Duncans and I made what he asked for. If someone can drop him a line, he can confirm what he ended up with and how he likes them.

Re: Mad Scientist Hybrid Question Thread

:friday:I've been using the 59'neck and paf pro, each one at once -not as a hybrid- in the neck. When i installed the paf pro i missed the vintage cristaline cleans and the low end of the 59' model; when the 59' was installed i was missing a little bit the mids and some push that i though the paf pro have. I love the paf pro singing quality and the more even eq but i find it a little thin in comparison. All this is said considering that each pick up got a nature, plus the gear and preferences. The 59' is doing it great in my godin and it is not moving from it now.

After all this explanation, i want to share to you that the idea of making a hybrid 59'model neck with a paf pro, as a very interesting mix of both classic voicings, has been around my mind for a couple of years. I don't have the time and courage to do it now, but would be great to know the results if someone take the risk. Just my two cents.

So:

1-The mix of vintage clarity and fat low end with the push, articulation and the more bodied mids of the paf pro.

2-The Name could be some like 59' pro, Classic Modern, The Grandchild. This is very up to changes since i'm not very good with this sort of things. The Larruncan name sounds fun to me. Seymouarzio haha. Chimour Runcan. Duncarzio. Larryour Diuncan. Dimourarzio.:ban:

Anyways is a very interesting idea and i desire that you have the best fortune in this quest.:fingersx:

A Super Duncan Distortion?

All the beed and bottom and thick of a SuperD, and the scream and shriek of a Distortion?

The super D could be refined with a 59' b/n coil. The idea of tamed/finer super d with the vintage cleans comes to my mind. Or maybe something like the super d full shred, the mix of classic rock beef and modern clarity. Could be named the Super shred or the Full D or The 90-60-90:naughty:.

Re: Mad Scientist Hybrid Question Thread

One think to keep in mind is that many Dimarzios are already hybrids. Their main patent is centered around this concept. So if you make a hybrid out of a Custom and a Fred, it will make a difference which Fred coil you choose. The ~4K coil of the Fred is basically a PAF Pro coil, the ~5k coil is the uniquely Fred coil.

Re: Mad Scientist Hybrid Question Thread

In this scenario, Seth Lover could actually get the PAF name back.

Full Shred + Fred for, natch, THE FULL FRED.

Brightest humbucker ever: SCREAMIN DEMON FROM HELL

The Pearly Gates bridge needs more low end, so mate it with a Tone Zone ... for a Pearly Zone. Or Gates of Tone. Or something.

I wish this kind of thing happened more often. The JHS and Keeley Steak & Eggs dual "hybrid" pedal must have made fans of those respective companies happy.

Re: Mad Scientist Hybrid Question Thread

Also, screw Dimarzio, let's hybridize the Slash and Jason Becker pickups for the SLASH AND BURN.

I'm having way too much fun with this.

I have never tried making a hybrid with a DMZ and a Duncan coil, simply because both coils have different polepieces spreads, so I don't see how you can you mount'em on the same baseplate without making major mods to them.

You say's physically possible to do it?

I simply remember having all those brands and just making what Blueman asked for. It was years ago. If he will stop by and confirm what he ended up with, we will have some answers.

Do you remember having to drill or otherwise modify baseplates?
