Made my own Hybrid!

25's Nemesis
Hi all.

After hearing so much talk about hybrids lately, I decided to see if I could make one myself.

Since I didn't want to trash a pair of Duncans, I decided to use the neck and bridge pickups out of my friends SX.

They are both ceramic loaded. The neck measured 8.3k and the bridge measured 16.9k.

I succeeded late last night and ended up with a pickup that measures around 13.3k.

I think I killed the stud coil of the other pickup, so one of them is a throw-away.

I will install it in one of my guit

It's not that hard....I always take pictures and or write down where my original wires went before I take the wires apart....Glad it worked out for you....Alot of guys are missing out on a great pickup(s) with the Hybrids....The best imo are still the 59B/Custom and the Jazz/59N...

Haven't heard of these Hybrids before - do I understand correctly that it involves taking one coil from two different humbuckers and putting em together? Sounds like an expensive, but fascinating hobby, if that's what we're talking. Not that expensive, I guess, since you still end up with two pickups in such a scheme.

Is there a "master" thread somewhere on this? I'm currently thinking on trying to do some winding of my own - a friend of mine (way more skilled with wood and wires than me, but not a musician) and I are gonna work on a guitar together this year, and I thought that winding our own pickups would be a kick. The concept doesn't seem too difficult, and the possibilities really are endless...

Re: Made my own Hybrid!

I just did a hybrid for the first time last week, and believe me, I'm the type of guy who would normally lose an eye attempting something like this. It really wasn't that difficult...hardest part was working those @#$% covers off! :)
Granted, I was working with two 4 conductor Duncans, so what wires went where seemed obvious when layed out in front of me. After the covers, it took about 30 min. to solder, reassemble and tape, and that was with me being newbie-nervous (like i was diffusing a bomb :smack:). Just watch your tools around those coils, and don't tug around those lead wires too much, and you'll be fine.

Wow "mang" is just catching on everywhere!

In my case, it caught on a loooong time ago. My friends and I used to cuss each other out in Scarface accents back in high school, and then Ween used it in The Stallion Pt. 2, which sealed it... :>
