Mag Swapping the 59/Custom Hybrid...Has Anyone Tried A8?

When A8 mags first came around, lots of people swapped them into the regular Custom with great results and there are quite a few threads in recent years where players swapped A2, A4 and UOA5 mags into the 59/Custom Hybrid, usually to tame the highs or warm it up a bit.

But, I haven't really seen/read any first-hand accounts about swapping an A8 into the 59/Custom Hybrid other than passing suggestions in those old threads.

Has anyone here tried an A8 in the 59/Custom Hybrid?

Thoughts? Results? Comparisons?

Has anyone dared try a Ceramic?

How does it compare to the A5? What did you like/not like about it? Have you tried Ceramic?

No, i don't do ceramic mags as I don't play the kind of music a ceramic p'up could be a viable possibility.

I haven't tried the 59/C but in my experience A8 in a hybrid really accentuates the mids created by the coil mismatch. Really makes it grind. You kind of have to get used to it but I like it.

I remember reading one of the many threads on here that really pushed the mids out and gave it more perceivable output.

Well, by default, an A8 *should* boost the mids and bump up the output compared to an A5, but that's very general.

I'm really looking for first-hand accounts with the 59/Custom explicitly, because hybrids can have more dramatic reactions to something like a magnet change. In other words, just because A8 sounds thick and aggressive in the Custom doesn't mean it'll sound or react the same in the hybrid.

I'm curious about the resulting character, voicing, harmonic quality, etc.

With all the A8 fanfare that goes on around here, surely someone has tried this?

Well, I've tried it and love it. It actually does what you would expect it to do. Compared to the hybrid with the A5, the A8 gives it more mids, less shriek, stronger chunky bass, and more beef/balls/output.

Mag Swapping the 59/Custom Hybrid...Has Anyone Tried A8?

The Duncan 59 according lore is based on the Schaller Golden 50.

Those chasing the tone of the hard to find Ibanez Maxon super 70 ( EVH used these as well as V2s) often swapped the A5 mag in a golden 50 for a roughcast oversized A8.

I’ve taken a super 58 clone ( not far off a Seymour Duncan 59 but A3 instead of A5) and got a very pleasing result. So much so that the APH pros in that guitar were sold as I loved the super 70 clones that these super 58 clones became.

How will it sound? Like an A2 PAF on steroids. Very vocal in the upper mids. Slightly soft top end but still bright, tight bass and lots more output. Will drive like a super distortion without being muddy. Will have the clarity and bite of a DiMarzio super 2 without being shrill or clanky.

Oversized Ceramic 8 is similar but less bass and more clanky - sounds good though. I’d bet it would Dimarzio super 2 like

I thought the 59 was based off of the original PAF Gibson pickups that they made back in the day.
The Golden 50 was what Kramer originally used.
