Magnet orientation?

Last night I took apart two pups. A 59 and a JB.

The 59 I bought off ebay and the lead wire on it was short so I had to replace it. The JB I had to work on because the screw holes on the mounting bracket had been stripped out. So, I took the coils off the stock SD JB bracket and put it onto the bracket of a different pup.

Anyway... My question is this... Does the orientation of the magnet affect how the pup operates? Is there a correct way and incorrect way to place the magent?

If there is a difference, how does one tell which way the magnet should be placed into the bracket?

Re: Magnet orientation?

The correct magnet orientation is the following:

screw coil: south
slug coil: north

Thanks Pepe
Do you know how to determine which edge is north and which is south?

To know for sure you need to use a compass. I have 'bout thirty magnets, most have no markings, some have markings in the north side and other in the south side.

Ah, ok... Thanks for the help!!!!!

BTW, do you by chance know why this matters?

* screw coil: south
*slug coil: north

I understand that this is how they are oriented, just curious to know why they do it that way.

Re: Magnet orientation?

if one of the two pickups in the same guitar have a magnet the other way around, you'll get an out of phase sound. it doesn't make a difference when used on its own. it doesn't matter if you get north or south facing the slug coil or the screw coil as long as both pickups have the magnets the same way. it would be better to put the mags in the correct way for use with other pickups but it really doesn't matter and wont affect the sound in anyway if you happen to put them the wrong way.
