magnet orientation

Does it matter how you insert the bar in a humbucker aside from how it sounds when combined? In other words, i know it can make for issues when combined depending on how it's oriented, but when the HB is used alone does it matter?

Re: magnet orientation

It does matter in a two HB guitar. Also in any P-90 (which need to be sitting so they repel each other).

Re: magnet orientation

I would think this would depend if the coils were balanced or not. The 59/Custom Hybrid, with coils that are not the same, may sound different.

No.

The very concept of having a p'up sound different because of the orientation of the magnet is prepostrous, to say the least.

Why do you felt the need to have a say on something you obviously know nothing about? What good does it do to the Co, diffunding misinformation in its name?

You, of all people, should know better.

No emoticon.

Re: magnet orientation

Thanks. Works well when combined, even exceptionally. That whay i only wanted to know if it mattered when used solo. Guess i'm good to go. Have another question tho....will a different magnet than A5 give the wound strings a crisper sound in a 59/custon hybrid, and if so what would that be? I have some A3s both rough and polished on hand....no?

Re: magnet orientation

You can try the A3. It will drop the level significantly, flatten the response and loosen the bass. It will maintain a slight spike in the treble, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered suggesting you try it.

Don't waste your time with unpolished magnets. They definitely will *not* help with "crispness;" they'll do just the opposite, actually.

Honestly, the stock magnet in there now is the best you're going to get out of the situation.

I'd forget about any fantasy of getting authentic position 2 Strat quack. Rather, I'd focus on how to get the pickup to sound the best it possibly can for its primary purpose and then figure a way to get it the best it can for it's secondary purpose from there.

Other options to consider are replacing the Custom coil with a JB coil and maybe try a UA5 magnet; or replacing the 59 coil with a JB coil and then entertain the idea of an A3. The JB coil will do a better job getting you the quack that you want; but I'd still experiment with a partial split, especially if you also went with a weaker magnet.

What? That isn't what I was saying. Simma down, now. You are really on a roll this week.

What are you saying then? Or whom were you responding to?

That's what I read. That's what I responded to. But I stand behind the following statement:
"The very concept of having a p'up sound different because of the orientation of the magnet is prepostrous, to say the least"

For the rest, well... you present yourself like an "Ambassador" for Seymour Duncan, plus you're an Admin. I guess because of all that I expect you to act and respond accordingly which, in this case, as it stands, was not the case, pun intended.

If I'm proven wrong, I'll be glad to stand corrected.

Your Honor, I rest my case.

I will ask you right now to be nicer to people on this forum.
