Re: Magnet Preference

I like the power of ceramic. It keeps things tight and I find it easier to know what a pup is going to sound like. Alnico V is ok too, but I haven't found an Alnico II that I have liked yet, for my playing.

Re: Magnet Preference

Depends on the guitar and what position the pickup is in? I Like A5 in my neck and middle spots and "normally" an A2 in the bridge..

The A5 keeps the tone a bit tighter in the lows and overall and it's chimier in the highs..

The A2 is a bit looser in it's feel and adds a bit of extra mids I Like in my bridge positions...

Sometimes I'll also go with a A5 in the bridge, but only on my Gibson dual humbucking guitars....Again,I'm going for tighter lows and chimier, slightly less mids with the A5 magnet..

Re: Magnet Preference

Almost all humbuckers are ceramic....and the only one that isn't is getting replaced.

As for single coils, Alnico 5 neck & Alnico 2 middle. I don't have a bridge single, so I can't comment.

Re: Magnet Preference

For 'buckers, I like either alnico II or ceramics. For strat singles, alnico II and for the tele alnico V, with the exception of the Jerry Donahue lead pickup in my 50's style tele.

Re: Magnet Preference

For dual humbucking guitars I like a ceramic bridge and an alnico II neck, for single coils I like alnico V's because I run a tube screamer and don't want TOO many mids.

Re: Magnet Preference

I tend to not really think about it, but it seems to me I'm liking A2 humbuckers more and more now.

Re: Magnet Preference

I love the lighter sound of A2 mag based pups. Depending on design I can also do A5 in the neck slots.

Re: Magnet Preference

I actually use both alnico II and V, as well as ceramics - but not the III and IV. I also have some Lace Hot Golds, don´t know where to put them, probably they are close to the Alnico V-section?

Re: Magnet Preference

Well...I pretty much like em all! I have a wonderful sounding set of Jon Moore humbuckers with A3 mags. Dig the A-2's in my seths. A5's in Dimarzio Classic PAFs and several Tele pups. A2's and A3's in some tele pups. A5's in my strat. A5's in a set of Golden Age buckers...don't laugh...they sound very good. A2's in Lollar P-90's and A5's in a differnt set of P-90's. I've also had great tones from ceramic pickups. Hard to pick a fav!

Re: Magnet Preference

I prefer a "hard" Alnico 4, which I usually figure out by which one is hardest to pry off the refrigerator or other such object. It has less output than an Alnico 5 but has a lot of A5 "hardness" without the mid-scoop.

But everything depends on the individual personality of the guitar's wood, so I'm not married to A4.
