Is there a differentiation of quality of the magnets in higher-end pups and lower-end pups, or are the magnets of the same class (A2, A5, etc) pretty much identical?
I was actually wondering the same thing. I'll be looking for a replacement magnet in the near futur and was wondering if there were differences in magnet quality?
As far as material quality goes I´d say there´s not too much variance, at least not in a form that will matter tonally or for construction.
But there IS of course a difference in magnetic field strength. I´ve seen a-5 mags that were weaker magnetically than a typical a-2, and they sounded much more like an a-2 than an a-5 accordingly
I agree with Zerb. I've bought a bunch of magnets from several different sources and there doesn't seem to be much difference. But you can come up with a near-infinite variety of tones by varying the field strength.
If the material is the same, then watch out for variations in the diameter, length and exact seating of the magnet. If you buy your magnets from a guy in an alley called Saddam, they may be weapons of mass distortion.
I heard much about asian manufactured magnet, this was a topic here too. Basic line is the older american made magnets are better than the nowadays asian one. Others said today most magnets are asian made even in Duncans. Thats what i heard.
