magnet swap alnico slash

Re: magnet swap alnico slash

Hmm, I would think the A2P should have been called the 'Jazz' since it sounds a lot jazzier than the Jazz. The Jazz should have been called the A5P. I can't get anything resembling jazz out of a Jazz pickup, but I can do it with the Slash and the A2P all day.

Re: magnet swap alnico slash

Ok.

For the record: I STAND CORRECTED 'bout the Jazz/APH saga.

Looks like I need to revision my process of measuring a coil for an accurate rewind.

My apologies to TGWIF and Luke Duke.

I'd like to thank Frank Falbo, a person that I fully trust, for saying the final word so we can all put this diverb to rest.

HTH,

My apologies for getting heated Pepe.

Re: magnet swap alnico slash

Well i swapped the A2's for A5's. Not good. Basically lost all of the organic sound of the pickup, sensitivity is gone too. Sounds like EMG 81's now. I ordered some A3's and A4's. Gonna try A3's next. The A2's were sounding good just needed a tad more.

Your next step should've been the Un-Oriented Alnico 5 (UOA5).

That's the most "organic"-sounding mag there is, if you ask me.

It works wonderfully in low to very low winds in the neck position and in all PAFish winds in the bridge position, paired up with an A3 in the neck. I call this mag combo the "Vintage Whisperer™"

HTH,

Kojak, what would be the difference between A3 and A4's on these? The mags i have available are A2,A3,A4,A5,A8

A3's are bright, clear and focused. A4's are tight, balanced and lower power which can help solve balance problems.

A3's are fairly bright, but the high end is soft and rounded, as opposed to the sharp and thin sound of an A5. A3's also have a lot of mids, and not a lot of bass.

A4's have a more or less balanced EQ, so they more mids, but less treble and bass than an A5. They also have less mids than an A3. The high end on an A4 is a little sharper than an A3.

Have you done anything with UOA5's? That's a great magnet for the desirable middle ground between A2's and A5's.

DOn't have those. Looks like i'm going back to A2's. I ordered a set of Duncans for my other LP. Custom/Jazz. I guess i'll be using the APslash's for classic rock stuff and the other LP for hard rock/metal

Re: magnet swap alnico slash

i think the advice on the pickup height adjustment was overlooked. i have the a2p bridge and it has good chunk.

i'm glad to learn about the outcome of your magnet swap though. interesting.

the jazz model is a bit of a misnomer for sure but it was originally called the JM for john milner

Re: magnet swap alnico slash

So if I put an A2 mag in a Jazz (neck pickup), I would essentially end up with an A2 Pro, correct?

I am necro bumping this since it is the most relevant thread I have found.

I have an old Alnico II Pro in the neck of my fat mahogany Washburn; the pickup sounds AMAZING in that guitar.

I have another Alnico II Pro in the neck of a maple/alder 24 fret guitar that just does not have the same chunk to it even after adjustments, so I am considering mag swaps. I have thrown an Alnico VIII into a JB and totally dig both the tonal response and overall output, so am toying with the idea of an A8 mag in the Alnico II Pro. I do realize that I will have to keep the pickup further from the strings, but the power increase would be a welcomed change.

Has anyone tried going A8 in an Alnico II Pro?

Re: magnet swap alnico slash

I would think an A8 in the neck would be a bit too much. Try an A4 instead.
