Magnet swap in a Custom 5

I know an A2 will make it a custom custom, and a ceramic will make it a custom, what about an A4 or A8. Anybody tried this combo? What did it sound like. I think the A5 in it right now is a little harsh sounding..........

Re: Magnet swap in a Custom 5

I put an A8 in mine. Which loses some of the mid range scoop and makes it a tad smoother and thicker. You may also loose a little bit of the bottom end, but that may just be me.
I love my C8, but it may get yanked for something else in a few weeks, or it may not, I don't know :)

Re: Magnet swap in a Custom 5

I'd move to Ceramic or A8. A4 makes the sound a little more hi-fi, which can be nice and clear for a neck pickup, but makes a C4 sound a bit lifeless. You'll lose some of the C5's bouncy lows.

I'm actually looking at doing something similiar. However, I've never swapped a magnet out before. What does it do to the ohms rating, if anything? say if you swap out a ceramic for an A2, would a custom go from 14k to a 8k?

Re: Magnet swap in a Custom 5

I have 2 guitars right now with Customs that I have swapped in the A-8 mags. Both are Washburn USA MG's one swamp ash and one Mahogany with a Quilt Maple top boddies. I have used A-5, 2 and 8 mags in the same pickup in the same guitar.
A5 is big and open but with the scooped mids didn't cut through well enough for my solos. A2 was a little loose and weak overall but more ballanced than the A5 and had a nice buttery smooth solo voice. The A8 was tight, articulate, agressive and has a killer singing solo voice with a BIG over all tone.
The Custom wind with an A8 mag is one of my all time favorite pickups.

Re: Magnet swap in a Custom 5

I try to tailor the pup to the guitar its in and or what Im trying to achieve with that guitar.
I have a C5 in a strat and a Washburn. I have a Custom in one guitar and I have a C4 in my explorer. It was a C5 but the lows were just alittle too much. The C4 kept the same basic sound but took a tiny bit off the top and alittle off the bottom.
And I have a C8 in a Kramer focus 6000. Its just alittle warmer than a custom but has a great lead tone.

Good Stuff!!
